IN PHOTO: Provincial Nutrition Coordinator Bugaling and Nutrition Officer II Ferino of the National Nutrition Council-ROI evaluating the entries during the Regional Chef Olympics Competition organized by BJMP1 held on July 17, 2019 at the BJMP1 Compound, Parian, San Fernando City, La Union.July 17, 2019-The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Regional Office 1 (BJMP-ROI) conducted the 2nd Regional Chef Olympics Competition at the BJMP-ROI Compound, Parian, City of San Fernando, La Union as part of the 2019 Nutrition Month Celebration. The said event was participated by the city, district and municipal jails from all over the region.

The event started with an orientation of the participants on the mechanics of the competition. The contestants were given the opportunity to do the marketing of the food commodities they will be using at the City Wet Market. The preparation and cooking started at around 7 in the morning followed by the evaluation and judging by the member of the board of judges.

Participants were tasked to prepare delicious and nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner for persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in the region with the budget of P70.00 per person per day.

ECCD-F1K Provincial Nutrition Coordinator Helen Joy Bugaling and Nutrition Officer II Christie Ferino of the National Nutrition Council Regional Office 1 served as the board of judges for the contest. Criteria for judging includes Serving Method and Presentation (20%), Portion Size and Nutritional Balance (30%), Creativity and Practicality (30%), and Flavor, Taste, Texture and Doneness (20%).



JSupt. Lorelina Mina, Assistant Regional Director for Operations said in her message, that after the activity, they will expect that meals prepared in the different detention centers will be improved to ensure that inmates will still meet their nutrient and calorie requirements despite of the limited budget.

NO II Ferino shared about the 2019 Nutrition Month Theme “Kumain nang wasto at maging aktibo…push natin ‘to!”. She stressed the importance of physical activity and healthy diet for everyone. In addition, she also discussed tips on proper food handling.

Awarding of winners followed after the lecture. For the category of breakfast, Balaoan District Jail, Dagupan City Jail Male Dorm and San Carlos City were adjudged as Champion, First Runner-up and Second Runner-up, respectively. Balaoan District Jail still topped the lunch category followed by Agoo District Jail and Urdaneta District Jail Female Dorm. Also, San Carlos City Jail was proclaimed as the champion for dinner category while Balaoan District Jail and Tayug District Jail as the first and second runner-up, respectively.

The event participated by nineteen (19) city/municipal/district jails aim to improve the quality of food for the PDL to meet their daily nutritional needs despite the limited allotted budget. (CPF)
