RO9 Stunting 101As we celebrate the 46th Nutrition Month with the theme “Batang Pinoy, SANA TALL… Iwas Stunting, SAMA ALL! Iwas ALL din sa COVID-19!”, we also want to shift our focus on the stunted children and initiate project, programs, and activities that would eradicate the number of stunted children in the Philippines. The State of the World’s Children: Children, Food and Nutrition revealed that one in three Filipino children under five years old are stunted, which means they are too short for their age. Thus, the National Nutrition Council is exhausting all efforts to address malnutrition especially among children through the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022, which serves as the country’s framework for nutrition improvement.

To know the basics, stunting is the percentage of children aged 0 to 59 months (under 5 years old) whose height for age is below -2 standard deviation (moderate and severe stunting) and -3 standard deviation (severe stunting) from the median of the World Health Organization (WHO) Child Growth Standards.

According to WHO, stunting is one of the most significant impediments to human development, globally affecting approximately 162 million children under the age of 5 years. In fact, stunting is already considered a national and a global issue.

Bokod Mayor Thomas K

BOKOD, Benguet, June 12(PIA) - - Children and breastfeeding mothers are among the priorities of the local government here   during this prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

The local government distributed food packages tagged as “Nutritious Pack” to children aged 1-2 including underweight or stunted children and lactating mothers  who are among the vulnerable sectors.

The initiative is part of the Bayanihan Heal As One Act program of the LGU giving attention to those whose health and nutrition may be disrupted due to limited access to basic goods and services during emergency situations. This is  under the so called nutrition in emergency situations scheme  to protect and promote the vulnerable sectors.

Pagpupugay Nutrition Workers

In this fight against COVID19, NNC-CAR honors every Local Government Units, National Government Agencies, Non-Government Organizations, Civic Groups, Private Entities and other offices in their contribution to nutrition especially to the Local Nutrition Action Officers, District Nutrition Program Coordinator and Barangay Nutrition Scholars.

The region under Enhanced Community Quarantine requires and encourages work from home however, nutrition workers are not called to stay at home but they are mobilized to provide services in their respective areas. They are part of the skeletal workforce that ensures our safety amid this health crisis. Their services have gone beyond their description most especially our Barangay Nutrition Scholars.

Among the services they render are attending needs in the triage area, helping in the checkpoints, providing quarantine pass, repacking and distributing relief food and vegetables in their barangay and part of the team in monitoring persons suspected to have contracted the virus. They also join the team going around to distribute seeds and vitamin supplements to houses especially those with undernourished children and pregnant and lactating women. They continue to encourage mothers to breastfeed and practice proper complementary feeding. They ensure that children 2 years and below are given optimum nutrition.

In addition to their nutrition services, nutrition workers also join the house-to-house giving out and validating applications forms for the Social Amelioration Program (SAP). They are on the front lines to ensure that priority families are included in the SAP.

The great contribution of the Nutrition workers we consider as nutrition heroes should not go unrecognized. Providing care and services in times like this poses a major security risk to their lives. NNC-CAR would like to commend our nutrition heroes for their sacrifices and efforts.

Salute to all nutrition professionals!

pnc ACTIVATION articleThe “Taal Disaster Response” experience paved the way for the development of new Information Management (IM) tools and other information  materials for use in evacuation centers to respond more efficiently and more effectively to the nutritional needs of recipients during disasters and emergencies.

Nutrition Databoard

One of the Information Management (IM) tools developed by the Calabarzon RNC is the Nutrition Databoard. They are placed in the entrance of evacuation centers to  ensure that duplications of data sources are avoided and all target groups are covered.
