MANILA, Philippines – The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), despite impressive economic growth and cultural diversity, is still home to many ironies, such as the double burden of malnutrition. Undernutrition and obesity remains to be a big threat across the region.
Prevalence of stunting (low height-for-age) and wasting (low weight-for-age) among children under five remains a severe public health problem in ASEAN Member States. This is according to the 2016 Regional Report on Nutrition Security in ASEAN, Volume 2 published by the ASEAN, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Regional Nutrition Officers elect new set of officers

27 February, Taguig City - The Association of Regional Nutrition Officers of the Philippines, Inc. (ARNOP) elected its set of officers for 2017-2019 during its meeting at the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Board Room.
The newly-elected officers are Nutrition Officers III Emerenciana L. Francia from NNC-National Capital Region as President; Vice-President Nimfa D. Ekong, Region IX; Secretary Lourdes B. Orongan, Region 4-A; Treasurer Gladys Mae Fernandez, Region XII; Auditor Hannah Farinah M. Lidasan, ARMM; Business Manager Marilyn C. Valeza, Region V; and PRO Nińo Archie S. Labordo, Region VIII.

Locating the Chronically Food Insecure Population through Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)

In the global food security community, there has been a need for common definitions and common scale for classifying various food insecurity situations in terms of severity and implications for action. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) is designed to fill this critical gap in food security analysis.
In particular, the IPC-Chronic in the Philippines began in October 2014 with the conduct of awareness raising session on the IPC Chronic Protocol and training on online information support system, data preparation, and IPC Chronic Phase Classification. The final step is the conduct of Chronic Food Insecurity Analysis. In 2015 to 2016, 33 provinces of Mindanao and Luzon were classified according to level of chronic food insecurity.
NNC convenes network of Nutriskwela community radio stations

The National Nutrition Council convenes its network of community radio stations for the 7th National Conference of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program on 7-9 February 2017 in Baguio City.
More than a hundred participants representing 34 out of the 35 Nutriskwela community radio stations gathered to discuss and share good practices concerning various aspects of managing and operating the Nutriskwela stations. No less than Mayor Mauricio Domogan welcomed the participants while NNC’s top officials were also present including Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores who delivered the closing message and Deputy Executive Director Azucena M. Dayanghirang who gave the welcome message.
