As much as the elderly want to enjoy a relaxed and stress-free life in retirement, old age has a way of making it difficult for them to achieve that. Other than just weakening of bones and muscles, aging also brings along a myriad of other health concerns which prevents them from making the most of their golden years. So much for an easy retirement, it becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to stay healthy at this stage.

While that may be the case in general, the good news is that some measures can still be taken.   • Go for an active lifestyle- Eating right is not enough. It is only the beginning. To get better results, we need to supplement our diet with sufficient physical activities and work outs. But this does not mean that you have to go to the gym and do some strenuous exercises. There are a lot of other activities we can do to get our daily dose of exercise such as walking, jogging, stretching, and even just cleaning around the house. Doing simple activities like these can produce wonders for your body like keeping it strong, flexible, and healthy. What more, studies have shown that it also helps you keep a healthy state of mind by reducing stress and improving sleep.

As to how much exercise is necessary for the elderly, experts’ advice 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise every day would be ideal. But then again, it may vary from person to person so to be on the safe side, it would be best to consult with an expert to determine a suitable exercises and workout time.

  • Go for regular check-ups- As people get older, they become more vulnerable and prone to more diseases. As such, whether it your dentist, cardiologist, psychologist, and your general physician, make sure to have your regular check-ups. This is important because doing this will keep you up to speed of the changes in your body’s health and wellness. By knowing the state of your body, you are able to determine which foods and activities are suited for you and you can act accordingly.

Aside from this, having regular dates with your doctors will allow you to catch diseases much earlier. With this, you have more time to prepare and decide on the proper course of action you should take.

  • Go for a stress-free lifestyle- While stress is a regular part of our lives, too much of it can cause our mind and body to suffer. Many studies have proven that stress not only affects your mentality but also your general health. As such, it is important to manage our stress levels to promote a healthy life. Other than steps 1, 2, and 3, it also helps to maintain healthy relationships and cutting off bad habits like vices and other addictions. Another good way to cope with stress is to find healthy hobbies and activities such as painting, dancing, gardening, and the like.
