Bangued, Abra—The Provincial Nutrition Office of Abra was officially opened after its inauguration held last March 6, 2014 after the opening program of the Abrenian Kawayan Festival.

The office was requested by OIC-Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC-CAR Ma. Eileen B. Blanco and Provincial Health Officer/ Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Leona Beroña in a courtesy visit to Governor Eustaquio “Takit” Bersamin, Chairperson of the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) last September 25, 2013 and was finally installed for its purpose.

The inauguration was spearheaded by Abra First Lady Ruby Bersamin, OIC Blanco & PHO/PNAO Beroña.

OIC Blanco said in her message during the program that this is a good start towards a closer coordination among partners and stakeholders to combat malnutrition in the province.

“Abra’s undernutrition rate among preschool children dropped by 9.67% in 2013 from 12.36% in 2012. The decrease made Abra as the 2nd among the provinces in CAR with the highest malnutrition rate, which is a record breaking for the province since Abra has been consistently the top province with the highest number of underweight children,” she gladly added.

The inauguration was witnessed by the members of the PNC, municipal nutrition action officers (MNAOs), DOH- Provincial Office, community members and NNC-CAR staff.

Moreover, the congresswoman of the province Hon. Maria Jocelyn V. Bernos positively considered the establishment of a provincial malnutrition ward in the Abra Provincial Hospital which will be another strategy in addressing malnutrition in the province.
