BAGUIO CITY, April 20 (PIA) -- The Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and the National Nutrition Council (NNC) recently came up with the guidelines on the good practices on nutrition award that recognizes the outstanding achievement and contributions of various stakeholders in addressing malnutrition problems and at the same time promoting good nutrition among their respective target clientele.

Regional Nutrition Coordinator Rita Papey said though the best practice on nutrition award is essentially accorded to local government units , the guidelines include programs or activities of non-government organizations, national government agencies and other private institutions with significant contributions in nutrition improvement of their clientele.

Criteria for identifying best practices include the following: uniqueness/originality/innovative in nature, relevance, effectiveness, completeness of supporting documents, efficiency, sustainability, and client or community involvement.

Entries for the search will be by nomination either by other party or by self-nomination. After validation of the entries, the result will be presented to the RNC for approval.

There is no limit to the number of winners as long as the entry will meet the required score of 88 points or 88%.

According to Papey, malnutrition in the region is persistently a concern with the substantial number of undernourished preschool children in some areas and other vulnerable groups suffering from undernutrition.

Problems on undernutrition are aggravated by increasing number of overweight and obese individuals across all age groups, she added.

She explained that acknowledging the effect of malnutrition to the affected individuals and to the economy in a broader sense, some local government units impressively favor programs to address malnutrition in their agenda and conduct innovative programs, strategies and activities to decrease malnutrition and promote good nutrition. So, too, are some NGOs, and civil society groups, among others.

The search will be incorporated in the annual Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation of the region. Winners will be given recognition during the annual regional nutrition awarding ceremony. (Maria Aprila Cruz – PIA CAR)
