Together with the Department of Health and other partners and stakeholders, the National Nutrition Council joins the observance of Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) which aims to highlight the vital role of iodized salt in preventing thyroid disorders such as goiter.
Goiter is a condition where the thyroid gland have an abnormal enlargement which can lead to the appearance of a mass or swelling in the neck. The signs and symptoms varies and it may include tiredness, decrease or increase in weight, low or increased appetite, depression, dryness of skin and hair, sleepiness, diarrhea or constipation and menstrual irregularities for women. If left untreated, this could lead to a more serious condition and even death among susceptible individuals.
Since Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of goiter in the Philippines, people are encouraged to consume foods rich in iodine and to use iodized salt in their meals. Special attention should be provided to pregnant women because iodine deficiency during this critical period can cause premature birth, miscarriage or delivery of a baby with low intellect. The following are some list of iodine rich foods that should be consume and/or incorporate in your daily meals.
- Dairy Products such as milk, cheese and yogurt
- seafood (shellfish and seaweeds)
- meats
- bread
- eggs
- Iodized salt
In addition to incorporating iodine rich foods in your daily meals and to ensure that you remain as healthy as possible, don’t forget to always eat your meals in moderation, consume variety of foods and have a balance meals. The Pinggang Pinoy recommends you to should also try to:
- Enjoy a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber needed for the regulation of body processes.
- Eat less salty, fried, fatty, and sugar-rich foods to prevent chronic diseases.
- Stay physically active!
Goiter Awareness Week is observed every 4th week of January of every year declared under Presidential Proclamation 1188 on December 11, 2006.
