The Malabon City Nutrition Committee launched “Usapang Bawas Taba Tungo sa Malusog na Bata” as an innovative strategy in reducing the problem of overweight and obesity among preschool children in all 21 barangays of the city.
The activity facilitated by the City Nutrition Office and City Social Welfare and Development Office, aims to promote healthy weight among preschool children by engaging them in regular physical activity and making them understand the importance of eating healthy meals.
All children enrolled in day care centers were given exercise kits including hula hoops and jumping ropes that they use in their daily exercise and games. Before classes start, day care teachers lead the children in doing exercise activities. Zumba sessions dubbed as “Zumbakids” are also conducted as part of their physical activity. In addition, parents and caregivers are given nutrition education on how to manage and prevent overweight and obesity among children. They are taught how to use Pinggang Pinoy as guide in serving healthy and nutritious meals for the family.
Through the “Usapang Bawas Taba Tungo sa Malusog na Bata” initiative, the city nutrition committee is hopeful that more preschool children will have and maintain healthy weights by eating healthy meals and being more physically active. (TAR/NPC MEVF/NNC-NCR)
