VIGAN CITY, March 22 (PIA) -- More than a hundred nutrition action officers (NAOs) gathered in a 3-day conference-workshop to address the increasing incidents of non-communicable diseases (NCD) on March 13-15 at the Vigan Convention Center, here.
The gathering of the NAOs coinciding with the 26th Regional League of Nutrition Action Officers (RLNOAs) Conference-Workshop focused on the importance of physical activity and healthy diet as key instruments in addressing the increasing incidents of NCDs.
According to Department of Health Region 1 (DOH-1), NCDs include autoimmune diseases, strokes, heart diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney diseases and other diseases which are most non-infectious and said to be the leading cause of death globally.
This year’s assembly is themed: NAOs of Region 1 for PPAN (Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition): “Kapit-bisig sa Pagsugpo ng Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Para sa Malusog at Maunlad na Kinabukasan," was also held to give nutrition updates among the members coming from the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte.
Moreover, the conference was an avenue for the NAOs to hold its annual meeting or general assembly and to assess the progress of the league.
“The NAOs, together with nutrition stakeholders, are one of the most viable and potent manpower on the management of nutrition programs particularly in the local government units,” said Dr. Jimuel S. Cardenas, chief of Local Health Support Division of DOH-R1 in his message during the opening program on March 13.
"As we fight malnutrition in the region, we will continue to enhance the skills and knowledge of our nutrition government workers and involve key players in the process," added Cardenas.
In a message of RLNAO President Floramante I. Yadao, he said that the organization as the prime mover in the implementation is united and committed to gradually remove nutrition problems in the communities.
During the opening program, the NAOs and members of the Regional Nutrition Council (RNC-1) composed of various regional line agencies with guests and visitors witnessed the launching of the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) 2019-2022. They also participated in the commitment wall where they posted their pledges.
The RPAN is the response of the RNC-1 in addressing malnutrition in the region, and the conference was seen as a venture to hold the launching.
The conference was spearheaded by the league in coordination with the DOH-1, National Nutrition Council Regional Office 1 (NNC-1), and hosted by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur. (JNPD/AHFF/PIA-1)
