VIGAN CITY, July 4 (Anne Hazel F. Flores, PIA1) -- To promote this year’s Nutrition Month celebration, the National Nutrition Council Regional Office 1 (NNC-1), in partnership with the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur and the City Government of Vigan, led the kick-off ceremony on July 1, here.
This year’s theme: “Kumain nang wasto at maging aktibo…Push natin ‘to” gathered more than 500 participants from partner regional line agencies, non-government organizations, media practitioners, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and the private sector.
At 6 a.m., the nutrition advocates gathered at the famous historical Calle Crisologo to participate in the Zumba exercise simultaneous with the Fun Bike and the Wheelchair Race, dubbed as: “I-daan sa Galaw!”
Bike enthusiasts and PWDs passed the different routes around the city proper which started in front of the Vigan City Hall and the Vigan Central School, respectively.
“The city government together with our partners extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who attended this event and who made its success possible despite the inclement weather we are experiencing,” said Vigan Mayor Juan Carlo Medina.
“Your commitment to promote nutrition is incomparable because your presence here shows how lucky our constituents are to have nutrition advocates who truly give their all out support to fight malnutrition in the communities,” he added.
After the Zumba activity, a poster-slogan making contest was held at the Vigan Conservatory Complex and was participated in by representatives from regional line agencies creating artworks that would encourage citizens to prioritize the nutrition of their families at home, schools, and in the communities.
Moreover, a press conference held at the Vigan Culture and Trade Center at 11 a.m. enjoined various attendees from local government officials and nutrition action officers, nutrition sector representatives, and media partners from Region 1.
“Our celebration this year focuses on the nutrition of Filipinos on key messages and that is to do one hour or more of physical activity every day, reduce screen time to two hours or less each day, and to eat the three food (go, glow and grow) groups everyday for variety,” said NNC-1 nutrition program coordinator Ma. Eileen Blanco.
July of every year is declared by Presidential Decree 491 in 1974 as Nutrition Month celebration which is aimed to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos and NNC to lead the nationwide campaign. (JNPD/AHFF/PIA1)
