March 24, 2021- The National Nutrition Council Region 1 spearheaded the conduct of online orientation on Idol Ko Si Nanay (IKSN) Learning Session for the Nutrition Action Officers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars of the Province of Ilocos Sur today.
The activity aims to equip all the participants in promoting behavioral change among all pregnant and lactating women, mothers of 0-23 months old children and other caregivers through conduct of IKSN classes in every barangays.OIC-Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC, Mr. Kendall Gatan said during the orientation that there is a need to standardize the cascading of the First 1000 Days program among the beneficiaries through the IKSN classes.
“The implementation of IKSN classes will be a great venue to increase and improve the knowledge and behavior of the pregnant and lactating women and the soon to be mothers on the specific interventions they will need from pregnancy until their child will reach two years of age”, he added.
The highlight of the orientation includes the thorough discussion of the First 1000 days program highlighting the RA 11148 and the procedures and steps in conducting the IKSN learning sessions especially in the barangay which was facilitated by Ms. Helen Joy Bugaling and Ms. Wylibeth Lumpias of NNC-Region I, respectively.
Both facilitators encouraged and emphasized to the nutrition workers to always practice the minimum public health standards during the implementation of the IKSN at the barangay level during this time of pandemic.
Also, NNC Region I will continue to provide technical assistance on the IKSN and monitor its implementation at the barangay level together with provincial nutrition office of Ilocos Sur.
Nutrition education like the IKSN is an essential part for health and nutrition activities particularly during these days where appropriate and comprehensive information dissemination is needed. The activity will surely help the target beneficiaries at the barangay level by enhancing their knowledge, skills and attitude. Various strategies and approaches on desired behaviours and practices will also be attained through efficient nutrition education. /HJAB
