NO III Lonzaga giving nutrition  counselling to the participantsTUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- The National Nutrition Council Region 02 (NNC R-02) in line with the celebration of World Population Day led by the Commission on Population (PopCom) delivered Nutrition Services to its clientele last July 11 in Tuguegarao City.


As part of this year’s theme, “Investing in Teenage Girls”, the National Nutrition Council Region 02 (NNC R-02) conducted nutrition counselling by Ms. Ma. Gisela Lonzaga, Nutrition Officer III. This service directly help teenage moms, pregnant and lactating mothers who were present in the said affair.


In addition, other clients also seek for proper nutrition advice in order to monitor their Nutritional Status to avoid lifestyle related diseases. Moreover, the agency distributed IEC materials such as Pinggang Pinoy, Breastfeeding Fact sheet and other related materials.


Mr. Angelito Obcena, Regional Director PopCom R-02, expressed his gratitude to the agency because of its support in the said the activity which is part of the region’s effort to curb prevalence rate of teenage pregnancy in the region following the result of a study which revealed that Cagayan Valley Region is the second highest among regions on teenage pregnancy prevalence rate.


Dr. Geraldine Ramirez, president of the Philippine Pediatric Society in Northern Luzon, said the Philippines is number one among Asian countries with the highest number of teenage pregnancy. She stressed that family planning and consultations with health experts are very important.


“You should not be ashamed to ask physicians or any health service providers about the risks of pre-marital sex and teenage pregnancies. We are here to help you and to serve you,” Ramirez said.
Lastly, Dr. Teresita Reyes, obstetrician and head of the Itinerant Team of the Department of Health R-02, discussed the reproductive system, birth cycle and the risks of early pregnancy. She presented the negative impact of pre-marital sex and unsafe sexual activities to the health of the mothers as well as the child born without assistance from health experts.
