Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon Congress 2018Bearing this year’s nutrition month theme ‘Ugaliing magtanim, sapat na nutrisyon aanihin!’’ The Kiddie broadcasters here in Cagayan Valley once again took the center stage in the 6th Batang Radyo Sa Nutrisyon (BRSN) Congress held on 30 May 2018 at Palazzo Marceline Event Center and Café, City Road, Santiago City.

The active young 156 nutrition broadcasters in their colorful attire proudly registered their presence and participation.


Organized by the National Nutrition Council Region 02 in partnership with the Department of Education Region 02 and Local Government Units, the BRSN members were clustered in six groups as to the local government unit they represent. Armed with training, confidence and support from the LGUs, BRSN members once again showcased their talent and learnings through their active participation in the different activities during the congress.


Ms. Rosario Ablaza, Nurse V-Santiago City, in behalf of the City Mayor Joseph Tan, warmly welcomed the participating kids, coaches and guests. She emphasized the importance of the young broadcasters in disseminating nutrition related information to the general public.


The Officer-In-Charge, Nutrition Program Coordinator Maria Gisela “Meggie” M. Lonzaga sincerely appreciated the delegates and their coaches as they sustained the noble purpose of the BRSN that is to reinforce the efforts of the National Nutrition Council in the promotion of good nutrition by educating their fellow school children and empowering the community through correct and up to date nutrition information.


She also explained the double burden of malnutrition among the school children that needs to be addressed. She encouraged the children to practice good nutrition and be physically active.


OIC Lonzaga likewise informed her young audience on their role for the successful implementation of Department of Education, Order No. 13, s. 2017: “Policy and Guidelines on Healthy Foods and Beverage Choices in School and DepEd Offices”. She said that this order aims to promote and develop healthy food choices and eating habits among the school children. Hence, they should demand for healthy foods from the school canteen.


Furthermore, Ms. Lety Medina, DepEd Education Program Supervisor of the Division of Santiago City in her inspirational talk, recalled the journey of the Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon program which started in 2012. She recognized the efforts and commitment of the different participating schools in living up to its purpose to disseminate up-to-date nutrition related information.


Adding muscles to the 6th Batang Radyo Sa Nutrisyon Congress was a sharpening the edge with the topic, “Media Literacy: Proper Writing, Citing Sources and How to Spot Fake Information & News” presented by Mr. Angelo Gaygay, Public Relations Officer I- DA RFO 02, while the crowd were stunned by the appearance of the TV News Reporter, Ms. Danielle Rebollos, who discussed Broadcasting principles and Media Ethics to inculcate to the young minds of our dear BRSN members the values needed during their airing sessions.


The Batang Radyo broadcasters had to stand up and be spotlighted on what talents they could show and the power of their brief time broadcast presentation.


Bearing no rancor on the result of the simple contests, Cauayan City BRSN once again emerged as the over-all champion garnering a score of 40 pts while Quirino Province and Aparri, Cagayan both landed the first-runner up with a score of 23 points. Tuguegarao City also 2 points behind the runner-ups with a score of 21 points, while Nueva Vizcaya and Santiago City, ranked third and fourth runner up respectively.


The affair was also attended by Nutrition Officers of the different areas and members of Balay ni Ifan Media Group.###JNLB
