In recognition and gratitude for the dedication of healthcare workers in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 is designated as the International Year of Health and Care Workers (IYHCW). This year-long campaign, with the theme, “Protect. Invest. Together”, emphasize on the “urgent need to invest in health workers for shared dividends in health, jobs, economic opportunity and equity”.

HCWs, including our Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Nutrition Action Officers, and Nutrition Officers, have been in the frontline since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. They have been continuously providing health and nutrition services to people. HCWs are at higher risk of being infected with the coronavirus especially that they are exposed to the community daily. Today, number of people who are infected with the coronavirus is still increasing and thousands of frontliners are already infected.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) such as medical masks, face shields and body suits help them to become safe, however, these are not enough to ensure their health and protection. In order for HCWs to be fully protected with the coronavirus, they must ensure a healthy body and strong immune system.

To strengthen their body especially their immune system, one strategy for healthcare worker wellness is to have proper nutrition. Here are some nutrition tips for healthcare workers:

  • Have a balanced meal

It is important to consume balanced meal that has adequate amount of carbohydrate, protein and fat to support the nutrient and energy needs of the body in fighting infection and diseases.

  • Boost immune system

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These contain vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, E, A, B, selenium, iron, and others which is important in strengthening the immune system.

  • Drink plenty of water

Healthcare workers should drink enough amounts of water 8 glasses per day) to stay hydrated all day. Water helps the body to function at optimum levels. It also helps in the elimination of toxins which may weaken the immune system.

  • Exercise regularly, Get enough Sleep, Practice proper hygiene

Lack of sleep can affect the immune system.  Having a regular exercise and enough sleep (at least 7 hours each night) combined with proper diet is essential to have a healthy mind and body.  Also, it is recommended to practice proper hygiene by frequently sanitizing and washing hands to prevent the spread of the virus,

Healthcare workers are putting in long hours of being in the frontline to provide medical and nutrition services and to provide care to infected patients. Thus, it is vital to maintain healthy body and strong immune system through proper nutrition.  ###FVV
