As temperature gets higher during the summer season, staying hydrated is very important. In the Pinggang Pinoy of Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), a glass of water is included in every meal to highlight the importance of drinking ample amount of water daily, especially during the summer heat. Afterall, our human body is composed of about 60% water depending on age and body composition. It is recommended to take in at least 1.5 – 2 liters or at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
Water contains electrolytes – minerals that are needed by the body for normal bodily functions and has 0 calories. With these properties, water plays the following vital roles and functions in our body:
- A vital nutrient to the life of every cell in our body.
- It regulates our internal body temperature through sweating and respiration.
- It lubricates our joints, and our eyes.
- It forms saliva, an important factor in our digestive system.
- Acts as a shock absorber for our brain, spinal cord, and the fetus during pregnancy.
- It is needed in the production of breastmilk for the babies.
- Plays vital role in body detoxication, mainly through urination.
- It is needed for blood volume and circulation.
- Acts as a transport material for nutrients and wastes.
With the high temperature this summertime, our body tends to perspire more than usual to regulate out internal body temperature, hence the need to always check on your water intake. Thirst and dark-colored urine usually indicate dehydration, so always keep water accessible. You can also hydrate using fresh fruits with high moisture content such as watermelon, cantaloupe, and citrus, which can also help in boosting your immune system during these trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Avoid drinking sugary beverages since this may cause dental problems, diabetes mellitus, and increase in weight. -EMArcinue
