National Nutrition Council R-02, in its aspiration to innovate and improve the nutrition situation of every Barangay in Region-II, conducted a five (5)-day training on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) among teams of able trainers of different municipalities in Region II at Hotel Veniz, Baguio City last August 17 to 21.
The trainers were primarily the District/City/Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/C/MNPCs) as well as Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs), Nutritionist-Dietitians (ND), and other designate trainers of BNS. The Course Director of training was NPC Rhodora G. Maestre and trainers/ facilitators were Ms. Henedina Cabrera – Nutrition Officer III- PHO Isabela, Ms. Luningning Rhodes- Nutrition Officer III- PHO Quirino ,Ms. Amalia Calubaquib- Nutritionist Dietician III- CHO Tuguegarao and Ms. Nareta Maximo- Nurse IV-CHO Cauayan
The training course consists of six (6) modules designed to assist the trainees in training BNSs to have a common basic knowledge and skills as well as core values and traits that are necessary for the BNSs to perform their roles and functions effectively.
The NNC-02 is happy to note that the participants had a tremendous increase in knowledge and skills on BNS program as reflected in the results of their pre- and post-tests. Being enlightened in this training course, the trainees shall utilize their learning in uplifting the capabilities of both existing and new BNSs to ensure effective delivery of nutrition and related services.
“This training help me enhance my capabilities and skills as a BNS”, said Realyn Siriban,BNS of San Antonio Lal-lo Cagayan.
Participants were given “Trainer’s Manual on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars” and a manual for continuing education of BNSs which will serve as guide of the trainees in conducting trainings and continuing education for BNSs.
With all the valid concerns raised by the participants, NNC-02 shall make an effort to continually improve the capabilities of nutrition workers in Region-II as part of its vision in ensuring the nutritional well-being of all Filipinos.
