BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya – The campaign on proper nutrition will be brought to the barangays to eradicate malnutrition in the country, an officer of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) said.
“We will be bringing regular information to the communities on the importance of maintaining proper nutrition not only among children but also adults,” said Rhodora Maestre, regional nutrition coordinator for Cagayan Valley.
She made the statement during an informal media interaction at the Saber Inn and Restaurant in this town inorder to finalize the 2013 Media Plan for the province.
She said with the presence of modern technologies, proper nutrition must be taught intensively inorder to prevent the rise on the malnutrition rate of the country.
Training acitivities will be conducted in barangays where front line workers and mothers’ groups will be organized and developed as strong community support organizations.
These groups, Maestre added, will be tapped to assist community villagers in internalizing their social responsibility that proper nutrition is an affair of the family.
“At present, we need to teach parents and their children in facing the realities brought by modern technologies, there is now a shifting of habit among children in eating the food in front of televisions, computers and the growing reliance on convenience food. These are wrong habits that must be changed,” Maestre said.
She said malnutrition rate in the region is still at 10 percent which can be easily addressed because these are mostly cases of underweight, undernutrition and overweight individuals.
“We hope to improve our nutrition status for this year because of our intensified media campaigns which will tap the trimedia in the region,” Maestre said. (BME)
