hearts month

It’s February! A time where everyone spread their love to their loved ones. However, let’s not forget that there’s also a heart that we should protect.  February is the Philippine Health Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 1096 signed on January 9, 1973. The proclamation aims to promote awareness of a growing serious health issue such as heart disease and encourage public support for the advocacy of promoting cardiovascular health and wellness among Filipinos.

Having a healthy heart is fundamental to overall good health. Like how you choose your own valentine, you must listen and feel to what your heart says. Whatever it says, have it check because you’ll be needing a healthy working heart to spread your love this season.

The 10 Kumainments of the National Nutrition Council advocates for proper nutrition and prevention of non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases that affect our hearts.

We can follow the following kumainments to keep our hearts healthy:

Kumainment #1: Eat a variety of foods every day to get all nutrients needed by the body.

Kumainment #3: Eat more fruits and vegetables to get the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber for the regulation of body processes.

Kumainment #8: Limit intake of salty, fried, fatty and sugar-rich foods to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Kumainments #9 and #10 which talk about observing healthy weight and proper lifestyle practices.

This February, let us prioritize our hearts and celebrate the Philippines Hearth Month! Promote awareness and cardiovascular health to all our loved ones. Let’s show love for our own hearts by embracing healthy lifestyle by eating healthy foods, consuming balanced diet, and getting regular exercises. – Khayla Mae Urata
