Representatives of PROMO Nutri Com shared some of the best strategies and good practices, projects and initiatives of the group in the recent Planning Workshop and Team Building of RONDA-I at Skylight Hotel, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan held March 23, 2017.
RONDA-I (Regional Organization of Nutrition Development Advocates, Inc.) and PROMO Nutri Com (Palawan Romblon Oriental Mindoro Marinduque Occidental Mindoro Nutrition Communicators) are the local media groups of Region 1 and MiMaRoPa Region, respectively. This activity is in line with the continuous aim to improve the services being offered by the local media groups in their respective regions and advocacy activities for the betterment of the nutrition situation in region. Through this activity, RONDA-I aims to plan their local media activities for 2017-2018 and to observe and learn new strategies, approaches and good practices PROMO Nutri Com as basis in strengthening and intensifying the nutrition promotion and advocacy in Region I.
Mr. Edgardo L. Javarez, Station Manager of RGMA Palawan and PRO of PROMO Nutri Com along with Ms. Gudula G. Sarsagat, Acting Station Manager of Radyo ng Bayan Palawan and Board Member of PROMO Nutri Com, shared the background of the group, its formation, best practices and the local media placements being conducted every year. PROMO Nutri Com was established in the Local Media Program Implementation Review (PIR), aiming to establish a group of media network, consisting of information officers from local government units and radio station managers from the different provinces and cities of MiMaRoPa, to converge efforts in bringing key nutrition messages to the people of the region.
With a mission statement to “Free MIMAROPA from hunger and malnutrition through information power”, PROMO Nutri Com has since conducted efforts to improve the local media placements in the region. Some of the best practices of the group are the following: continuous advocacy of nutrition both individually and as a group, prioritization of provinces with highest malnutrition prevalence rate in intensive advocacy activities on nutrition such as the development and distribution of relevant information, education and communication materials for and to the provinces and the conduct of advocacy meetings with the Local Chief Executives (LCEs). The latter is a pioneering advocacy activity initiated by the PROMO Nutri Com to further achieve their goals.
Some of the advocacy activities already conducted by the PROMO Nutri Com include an advocacy meeting with the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) of Abra de Ilog in 2013, Palawan Nutrition Stakeholders’ Forum and Marinduque Nutrition Stakeholders’ Forum both conducted in 2014, Occidental Mindoro Nutrition Stakeholders’ Forum in 2015, and the most recent Nutrition Stakeholders’ Forum for Romblon in 2016. PROMO Nutri Com also conducts technical workshops for the nutrition advocates in MiMaRoPa such as the Newswriting Workshop for the District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/CNPCs). The local media group also participates in various annual activities held by NNC MiMaRoPa including the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC), Nutrition Month Stakeholders’ Forum, and Non-Government Organization Forum, among others.
Aside from the Planning Workshop, RONDA-I and PROMO Nutri Com also visited Honorable Mayor Luis Marcaida III for an informal meeting, enlightening the new mayor of Puerto Princesa City of the activities being conducted by the local media groups. With this activity, both the groups gained important knowledge and strategies from each other which will help in achieving the goal of alleviating malnutrition through local media promotion.
