RBATF and SaltProducersDid you know that Occidental Mindoro is home of the largest salt producers in the country? The province’s topography, being surrounded by saltwater, proves this.

To ensure that salt producers and manufacturers in the province are provided with up-to-date relevant information on salt production and iodization, part of NNC’s tasks in overseeing the implementation of the ASIN Law in the region is to conduct regular monitoring activities to salt plant manufacturers and producers, together with the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) members.

As such,  NNC MIMAROPA conducted a virtual orientation for salt plant manufacturers and producers on 6 October 2020. The orientation began with the overview of Republic Act 8172 or the ASIN Law and the National Salt Iodization Program to provide insights and background regarding the law and the program. This was followed by a discussion by guest resource person Ms. Luzvimin G. Atienza, Regional Supervisor of FDA MIMAROPA,  which detailed the process of salt iodization and standard operations. She also talked about the good manufacturing practices salt plants should observe.

NPC Blanco reminded and requested all the salt plant manufacturers and producers to ensure that the salt they produce contain adequate levels of iodine to comply with government standards and to prevent violation of the law. She mentioned the important of iodized salts to consumers, particularly in  decreasing the prevalence of Iodine Deficiency Disorder.

On the other hand, the salt plants manufacturers and producers raised their concerns on the reagents used in checking iodine content and reported that there were instances when the solutions used were expired. They said that their products may be compromised due to possible negative result caused by the outdated solutions. Moreover, they reiterated that delays in delivery and shipment are factors that affect iodine levels.

For 2021, NNC MIMAROPA plans to conduct a workshop on the process of iodization and monitoring visits of salt plants in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, when all else comes into order. This activity will involve RBATF members and salt manufacturers and producers. (AVETPatriarca)
