Ding, ding, ding…. It’s the holiday season again!
In the Philippines, once December comes, various festivities begin. Some of the Filipino traditions include Simbang Gabi, holding of family reunions and hosting of Christmas parties. However, we are still challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, which limits mass gatherings and imposes observance of physical distancing.
The real question is, how are we going to celebrate this holiday while prioritizing the safety of everyone? How can we prevent the spread of COVID-19?
Last 26 October 2020, Department of Health issued the Department Circular 2020-0355 entitled “Reiteration of the Minimum Public Health Standards for COVID-19 Mitigation during the Holidays” to provide guidance on how to continue to observe the minimum public health standards and ensure safety of everyone while celebrating holidays and participating in activities.
DOH recommends the following risk mitigation measures to make holiday celebrations and activities safer:
- Limit the number of people in family and social gatherings and activities, preferably within the same household.
- Avoid activities that require travel to areas with higher quarantine classification.
- Keep activities short as possible.
- Always observed BIDA (B – Bawal walang mask; I – I-sanitize ang mga kamay; D – Dumistansya ng isang metro; A – Alamin ang totoong impormasyon).
- Avoid high-touch surfaces and ensure cleanliness of surroundings.
- Ensure proper ventilation of an activity’s venue.
- If sick, stay at home and avoid social gatherings.
- If an individual is vulnerable to disease, participation from large social gatherings and risky activities must be limited.
Also, to increase physical and mental resilience, DOH advises to practice healthy eating by consuming foods with variety, balance and moderation and avoiding foods high in salt, sugar and fat. Be physically active – have at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. Protect mental health by getting enough sleep, maintaining social networks and having trusted people to talk to. Lastly, prevent illness and injuries – avoid using of firecrackers and fireworks.
These measures decrease the risk of contracting the virus but the best and safest way to celebrate this season is through online participation or video teleconferencing according to Department of Health.
Let us all enjoy and celebrate this season minding the health and safety of everyone! (BLVMEstrella)
