Travel

Travelling, undeniably, is one of the most common activities that people do, be it for necessity, or for taking a vacation. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many flights were cancelled; resorts and leisure parks forced to close; and many vacation plans were withdrawn to prevent the transmission of the virus. But as the day goes by, establishments and businesses were gradually reopening. Travelling comes with the risk of getting and transmitting the COVID-19 virus. Taking some precautionary measures to prevent you and your family in getting the virus and at the same time enjoying your vacation. Here are some practices to consider:

Before Travelling

Check local transmission in your community and on your planned destination to have enough time to decide whether to reschedule, have a change of plans or to postpone your travel, especially when there is a high local transmission of cases. Check the local requirements needed and restrictions in your chosen destination to save yourself from unpleasant surprises and delays. Furthermore, remember that some businesses and services may be fully or partially disrupted in affected areas, including public transport, shops, and restaurants, as well as popular tourist attractions – make sure to check the latest information on changes of services and procedures.

If travelling with family, take consideration the age (mostly older and children below 18 years old) and medical conditions of your family members if there were any, for they are considered high risk of infection of the virus.

Moreover, if you not feeling well on the day of your travel, postpone it to ensure your protection. In addition, take a swab test before travelling to determine if you are okay to proceed with your plans.

During Travel

Always ensure to wear face mask/face shield, bring alcohol or sanitizers, medicines you may need in the trip, and tissues to cover when coughing and sneezing. Prepare and bring your own food to ensure that it is safe and healthy and choose more nutritious foods to increase immunity. Always observe social distancing with others as much as possible and limit contact with other people. Minimize contact with frequently touched surfaces like handrails, elevator button and kiosks. If it is a must to use it, always remember to wash your hands or sanitize afterwards. Regularly clean the items that are often used such as phones and keys and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, as well.

After Travel

When returning home, follow recommendations and requirements from your local government and follow necessary precautions needed – monitor symptoms of COVID-19 that may occur and seek medical advice if they develop. Furthermore, eat variety of foods that can boost your immune system such as citrus fruits and leafy vegetables that contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals to supply the body’s micronutrient needs.

In addition, perform a swab test for early detection to contain the spread of the virus. If at any point the result turns positive or any of your travel companions, stay at home, isolate yourself and follow strict 14-day quarantine to ensure your safety and protection of your family as well.

Travelling is one way to enjoy life, but always take in consideration your personal safety, your family and in the community. It is still better to spend your precious moment with your loved ones rather than in the hospital. There will be always time for leisure, however it needs to be extra careful in this time of pandemic for you to enjoy and relax without worries.
