Taking good care of the digestive system is essential for an individual’s optimum health and well-being. Recognizing the importance of such, President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed Proclamation No. 930 on 18 March 2020 declaring the second week of March as the “Philippine Digestive Health Week” to raise awareness on diseases and conditions relating to digestive health. This is in line with the provisions of the “Universal Health Care Act” (Republic Act No. 11223) which aims to aid Filipino citizens to be health literate and for the government to deliver proper knowledge on the hazards and risks that could affect their health.
The Department of Health (DOH) is mandated to lead, coordinate, and supervise the nationwide yearly observance of Philippine Digestive Health Week. All the other government agencies, local government units, members of private sectors, state universities and colleges, professional organizations are also encouraged to provide necessary support to DOH in conducting related programs, projects and activities.
One of the leading causes of deaths in the Philippines are related to the digestive tract, which includes liver cancer, colorectal cancer, peptic ulcer disease, diarrhea, and stomach cancer, among others. To ensure a healthy digestive system, it is best for an individual to eat high fiber foods, have minimal intake of food that are high in fat, choose lean meats, regularly include probiotics in meals, and to drink plenty of water.
As part of the week-long celebration, NNC MIMAROPA will continue to promote and provide necessary support in raising awareness on disease condition related to digestive health.
