03 2021 Lent

Lenten season forms a huge part of Philippine traditions. Fasting and abstinence from meat and flavorful foods on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and every Friday of the Lenten season are common practices being observed. Let's dive into the benefits that come with observing these traditions.

FASTING

Fasting is the act of refraining or limiting oneself in eating of any food or drink for a certain period which is traditionally observed during Lenten season. Fasting can be done in two ways - full fast where only liquids can be consumed; whereas the other one is partial fast where you can eat liquid and solid food items but in limited quantities.

Just a precaution: long period of minimal intake of food can lower your blood sugar levels and leave you feel lightheaded, dizzy with headache and/or nausea at the same time. On the other end, having low blood glucose may improve insulin functions to help prevent diabetes. According to Harvard Medical School, the practice of fasting provides the body a rest from taking in toxins found in foods and has a significant result in weight loss if practiced properly.

ABSTINENCE

Abstinence is the act of abstaining from consumption of any kind of meat such as beef, pork and chicken.  Less intake of these meats may reduce the risk of heart diseases, stroke and alleviate the blood cholesterol level. Lessened consumption of processed meats and fast-food items may also decrease the intake of fat and sodium as well.

While there are restrictions on what to eat, this practice allows substitution with fish and vegetables instead. Eating fish such as salmon and tuna which are excellent source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids provide heart health promoting effects. Other alternative protein sources include plant-based sources like vegetables, grains, nuts, and legumes can also be considered to reach desired protein requirements.

Lenten season is also a perfect time to give focus on your physical health. Doing these simple practices not only serves as an act of repentance and remembering His sufferings, but also provides benefits for physical health when done properly.
