Twenty-two (22) participants composed of newly designated nutrition action officers, local nutrition program coordinators, and new members of the municipal nutrition committees from six provinces in the Bicol region completed the five-day Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) conducted by the National Nutrition Council-Bicol on 5-9 October at Starview Hotel, Naga City.
The training was facilitated by three seasoned trainers of the region namely, Ms. Cathy Austria (former Nutrition Officer of Camarines Sur); Ms. Sheree Longaza (Nutrition Officer III of Albay) and Ms. Raquel Buere (Nutrition Officer of Naga City). NPC Reario joined the group on the 4th and 5th day of the training while Mr. Marvin Agripa, Nutrition Officer I of NNC acted as secretariat.
The training aimed at capacitating the participants to become trainers and mentors of their BNSs. A review of the facilitation techniques that enhanced their ability to organize, facilitate, and conduct the Training on the Basic Course for BNSs in their respective LGUs was an integral component of the training. The Basic Course Training for BNSs aims to equip the BNSs with the common basic knowledge and skills, core values and traits that are necessary for them to perform their roles and functions effectively.
“The TOT on Basis Course for BNS for newly designated nutrition action officers and members of nutrition committee aim at ensuring a quality-training to be provided to BNS in the field. We should ensure that quality service is provided to mothers and children in the community through our BNS. Without our BNS, reaching these mothers and children become difficult. We should all work toward capacitating our barangay partners so that reducing malnutrition becomes a reality.” said NPC Reario. She added that to further equip them with knowledge and skills needed to become effective nutrition workers, many of those in the group will be invited to attend the Training on Nutrition Program Management scheduled on 19-23 October in Legazpi City.
