Legazpi City – Eleven Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) representing their respective province and city in the Bicol Region competed to become the Champion during the 5th Regional Nutrition and Health Quiz held on 4 February at the Event Area of the Pacific Mall in Legazpi City. The event, led by NNC with funding support from DOH, once again showed the unity among the members of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and media partners towards a nutrition event. This quiz tested the knowledge and ability of the volunteers on health, nutrition, food, population, current events and programs on social services.
Indeed, all contestants were champions from their respective provinces and cities but only one took home the title as the regional champion. The battle of minds and enthusiasm during the whole contest was so intense that three tie breaking questions needed to be drawn on both the elimination and championship round to declare the winner. With PIA Director Naz as the quizmaster, excitement and heart-melting moments were felt during the contest.
BNS Wedona B. Ariola of Barangay Quitago, Guinobatan representing the province of Albay was proclaimed the Regional Champion after leading a point and breaking the tie with Ms. Shierly P. Abanes of Naga City. BNS Ariola almost didn’t make it to the quiz arriving in the venue only a few minutes before its start due to transportation problem. Despite her nervousness and anxiety, BNS Ariola triumphed and became the champion. BNS Abanes from Brgy Tinago, Naga City was declared as the first runner-up followed by BNS Rosela B. Paguia of Barangay San Juan representing the City of Sorsogon. All participants received a certificate of participation and cash prize. The grand champion received a cash prize of five thousand pesos (P5,000) while the 1st and 2nd runners-up received P3, 000 and P2, 000 pesos, respectively. All other contestants received 1,000 cash prize as consolation prize.
Dr. Napoleon Arevalo, Regional Director of DOH RO V and Chairman of the RNC extended his gratitude to the support of the members of the RNC and commends NNC for this event. He also expressed his thanks to all the contestants, coaches and LGUs for allowing them to be part of the said event. A grander quiz and bigger cash prizes for the next regional nutrition and health quiz mentioned by RD Arevalo will serve as inspiration to the BNS and BHW to study harder and do better in the next regional quiz.
