Sedentary Feb2022People are spending more and more time doing sedentary activities. The sedentary lifestyle is being at rest for too long with little or no exercise. Even during leisure times, often people are just sitting or lying down while using laptops or mobile devices, watching TV, or playing video games. Also, nowadays, working and learning have become more sedentary with long days sitting in front of a computer.

A Sedentary lifestyle or an inactive lifestyle is one of the major risks to one’s health. It can increase the threat of several chronic diseases and factors that cause mortality. Long duration of physical inactivity can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and high blood sugar levels, which can cause damage to the blood vessels and increases the risk of heart attack and even stroke. Being physically inactive and long hours of sitting is also a risk of certain cancers including colon, breast, and lung cancer.

In February, we are Celebrating National Cancer Awareness Month and Philippine Heart Month. With this, NNC Caraga would like to remind everyone that physical activity and regular exercise are vital for optimum health, and you may need to start moving now!
To prevent Lifestyle related diseases and causing premature death, you may start slowly by adding activities to your life in simple ways, such as at home and at work, and gradually adding more exercise in time. Making yourself move, like getting up from your chair and going around at least once an hour or even walking every day just for 30 minutes, is always better than getting none. But the more you can do, the better. Eventually, you do the recommended amount of exercise for your age and health. Also, the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos include a message that through being physically active, making healthy food choices, managing stress, avoiding alcoholic beverages, and not smoking prevent diseases. #LVPVargas
