Butuan City—Bislig City Nutrition Committee members and Barangay Chairpersons and their kagawad on health attended the three-day Training on Nutrition in Emergencies and Information Management conducted on 15-17 November 2022, at the Bislig Cultural and Sports Center in this City.

Executive Assistant, Mr. Oscar Macua welcomed the participants on behalf of Mayor Hon. Florencio Garay. In his message, Mr. Macua emphasized the importance of nutrition for the growth and development of the child and how he will become a productive citizen of the country.

Nutrition in Emergency as discussed in the first module, refers to the situation in which food security is often severely   threatened, causing increased risk of malnutrition, illness and even death.

City Mayor Garay identified that capacity development among the members of the Local Nutrition Committee is important, so that basic knowledge on nutrition program management will be acquired.

In 2022, Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+), the City of Bislig reported 10.9% stunted and 4.4% wasting.

It is important that proper planning of nutrition activities and inclusion in the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan for Health said by Surigao del Sur Provincial Nutrition Action Officer, Ms. Milloniza N. Serra. PNAO Serra facilitated the topics of Nutrition in Emergencies Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Activities.

Meanwhile, NNC Caraga, OIC Dr. Nino Archie Labordo emphasized the importance of the functional local nutrition committee and alignment of programs, projects and activities in the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition PPAN.

The twenty-four barangays are active and participated during the training and shared their commitment of support to the nutrition program management implementation.

City Nutrition Action Officer, Ms. Judith Renon said that the City Nutrition Office together with the LNC will be monitoring the inclusion of nutrition in emergencies in the barangay nutrition action plan.
