BUTUAN CITY- Nutrition Program Coordinator Dr. Nino Archie S. Labordo served as the guest speaker during the Region VIII Huruhimangraw ha Nutrisyon, 29 December 2022 at a local radio and television station in Tacloban City.

Invited by the episode host, Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo, Jr, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of Region VIII, Dr. Labordo shared the topic on Nutrition in Emergencies.

Every December of the year, most calamities occur, like typhoons and flooding by which vulnerable groups are most affected.

Nutrition in emergencies are nutrition services provided for the vulnerable sector, to include children, pregnant and lactating to prevent further nutrition and health deterioration.

Among the important function of the Nutrition Cluster shared by Dr. Labordo are: (1) conduct of rapid nutritional assessment in affected areas; (2) ensure timely and appropriate of quality package of nutrition interventions; (3) ensure that foods provided and distributed are nutritionally adequate; (4) conduct trainings and other various capacity building activities; (5) establish and promote coordination, networking, planning, social mobilization, advocacy, surveillance, monitoring, evaluation and reporting mechanism.

The topic also discussed how the local government unit through the organized Nutrition Cluster will be mobilized during emergencies.

DOH AO 2017-0007 Guidelines in the Provision of the Essential Health Service Packages in Emergencies and Disasters formalizes the guidelines in the effective and appropriate delivery of essential health services in emergencies and disasters.

The said policy defines the essential service components of the four sub-clusters namely health, nutrition, water and sanitation hygiene (WASH), and mental health and psychosocial support services (MHPSS). #NASLabordo
