Tandag Healthy Plipinas 2022Butuan City--- Kinabuhi sa Isa ka Libong Adlaw (K-ISA)- a first 1,000 days program package implemented in the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, bagged the first-ever Healthy Pilipinas Awards for Healthy Communities 2022 announced by the Department of Health (DOH) virtually on March 04, 2022

Under the Priority Area 1 Nutrition and Physical Activity, the K-ISA program focuses on the delivery of quality nutrition and health services in the first 1,000 days of life to all 21 barangays of Tandag City.

Through Executive Order 053 signed by City Mayor Roxanne Pimentel, the program promotes multi-sectoral efforts among the different stakeholders, particularly the members of the City Nutrition Committee, in providing a whole-package approach in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

The first 1000 days, also referred to as the “golden window of opportunity”, span from conception of the child up to the child’s second birthday. It is the period where child’s full potential in the different aspects of development can be achieved.

SCSurigao City - March 23, 2022, UNICEF Philippines and members of the Regional Nutrition Cluster visited Surigao City Health Office to further monitor the current nutrition and health situation of the city, which is one of the most affected areas of Typhoon Odette.

The team paid a courtesy visit to Surigao City Health Officer, Dr. Emmanuel Plandano, who was the former Surigao City Nutrition Action Officer.

Ms. Alice Nkoroi - Nutrition Program Manager and Dr. Martin Parreño - Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF Philippines discussed the need to further improve the nutrition data collection and active case finding of severely and moderately acute malnourished children in order to provide swift medical and nutritional interventions and prevent physiological deterioration that may lead to death.

Re entry March2022Butuan City--As an output to the Nutrition in Emergencies crash course, participants, particularly the young doctors assigned in Dinagat and Siargao islands formulated re-entries that are doable in the implementation of the Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) and Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) programs and activities on 18 March 2022 at Balanghai Hotel, Butuan City.

Mr. Arrian Necesario of the Siargao Island Medical Center (SIMC) and his team envisioned to establishing a functional referral facility of severely acute malnourished children on the island and reorganizing the Breastfeeding Committee of the hospital.

Dr. Weijin Sto. Domingo of the Municipality of Libjo in the Province of Dinagat Islands and his team crafted a plan that will build a network for the promotion of infant and young child feeding program particularly establishing breastfeeding support groups.

On the other hand, Dr. Timothy Jordan Manalag of General Luna, Siargao Island and his team pushed for the correct assessment through capacity building and provision of preventive interventions to target population.

The visit is part of the continuous monitoring of nutrition and health situation of the city to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of typhoon affected areas.

In a dialogue spearheaded by Dr. Martin Parreño, Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF Philippines, the team was able to communicate to the Barangay Health Workers (BHW) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) the need to intensify nutrition data gathering and active case finding of severely and moderately acute malnourished children.

Quick Orientation CRH march 2022Butuan City--Guided by the principle of timeliness of the Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM), Regional Nutrition Cluster visited and provided quick orientation on the assessment of a severely acute malnourished (SAM) child and the therapeutic food as one of the interventions to staff of the Caraga Regional Hospital, Surigao City on 20 March 2022.

Dr. Martin Parreño, UNICEF Philippines Health and Nutrition Specialist, quickly shared the nutrition assessment of SAM with complications and provided rationale on proper nutrition management. On the other hand, UNICEF Nutrition Coordinator, Ms. Kristine Angeli Gimongala discussed how to make F-75 milk formula.

The therapeutic milk, F-75, is given for the treatment of SAM with medical problems, correction of specific deficiencies, correction of metabolic abnormalities, return of appetite and start of feeding with medical supervision.

Present during the one and a half orientation were the staff composed of Medical Specialist II, Dr Cosnarie E. Seguis of Emergency and Family Medicine and Training Specialist of the hospital, Ms. Fransyl R. Jardenil, Ms Bessie T. Saavedra and Ms. Alpha May Galang of the Nutrition and Dietetics Service.

Rosario March2022Butuan City—Members of the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) and the Barangay Nutrition Committees in the Municipality of Rosario in Agusan del Sur gathered together to craft the local nutrition action plan for the year 2022 at the Balanghai Hotel from March 21-23, 2022.

The three-day planning workshop started with the orientation of the basic concepts and the phases of the Nutrition Program Management (NPM) and oriented on the functions of the local nutrition committee members in the implementation of the programs, projects and activities (PPAs) in nutrition.

Mayor Jupiter Abulog, the Chairperson of the Municipal Nutrition Committee, believes that with better health and good nutrition, people of Rosario will be productive and will be progressive, which is why he encouraged everyone to prioritize interventions that will further help improve the nutrition situation of the municipality.

As a necessary information in planning, each barangay identified the nutrition situation through the analysis of the 2021 operation timbang plus (OPT+) report. From the data, members of the planning core team discussed interventions that would propel nutrition program implementation.
