Butuan City--31 nutrition implementers and advocates successfully finished the 3-day crash course on Nutrition in Emergencies focusing concepts on the Philippine Integrated Management on Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) and the Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) on 16-18 March 2022 at the Balanghai Hotel, Butuan City.
The 3-day crash course is a skill and enhancement training for service providers specifically for Odette ravaged areas where number of malnourished children pose risk and deterioration.
With the support of the Samaritan’s Purse through UNICEF, the crash course focused on nutrition package interventions during emergencies, including the assessment and management of acute malnutrition.
Dr. Martin Parreno, one of the speakers and nutrition and health specialist of UNICEF believed that the crash course will help the doctors, nurses and service providers at the local government unit to assess and identify children who need help, particularly those with severe acute malnutrition conditions.
Topics included during the 3-day training are: nutrition in emergencies, nutrition assessment and return demonstration, micronutrient supplementation and Dietary Supplementation, community mobilization in PIMAM, clinical manifestation of acute malnutrition, community-based management of at-risk mothers and infants, and minimum service package for nutrition.

Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur---The Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur (PGAS) through its Provincial Health Office (PHO) provided an integrated health and nutrition services to the residents, mostly children, pregnant and lactating mothers, during the long Dental Health Month Celebration.
Part of the celebration of the National Dental Health Month and National Vaccination Day – Resbakuna Kids, the intervention package will help avail health and nutrition services at the grassroots.
Dr. Jacqueline Frances Momville, Provincial Health Officer II of PGAS–PHO thought that the celebration should not just include dental and vaccination services, that, it should be holistic. Part of the services provided to the community are the pediatric vaccination, dental services, pre-natal checkups, family planning counseling, and maternal nutrition education.
The maternal nutrition education for the pregnant mothers is led by Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO), Laniebelle T. Angchangco, together with the Provincial Nutrition Focal Point (PNFP) of Agusan del Sur for Dietary Supplementation Program – Tutok Kainan (DSP-TK), Mariella P. Rayco. Aside from counselling and nutrition education, the team discussed the importance of Pinggang Pinoy and 10 Kumainments.

Butuan City – At least 20 barangay nutrition scholars attended the Crash Course on the Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) conducted on 07 March 2022, at City Hall Food Supply Office, Butuan City.
The initiative aims to assist LGUs and provide Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) a re-orientation in managing cases of children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in accordance with the Department of Health Memo No. 2015-0055 or the National Guidelines on the Management of Acute Malnutrition for children under 5 years which provide standardized protocols, emphasis on linkages and referrals, supply networks, indicators for monitoring, and importance of PIMAM in emergency settings.
A demonstration was conducted on how to prepare the ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) and the proper way of using the Mid-upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape were emphasized in the orientation.

Butuan City – Nutrition Action Officers in the Province of Surigao del Sur re-orients on Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) during the conduct of its First Quarter Meeting on 8 March 2022 at the Gold Bar Function Hall, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.
In her presentation, Provincial Nutrition Focal Point, Ms. Julianne Janine Carrillo shared the electronic Operation Timbang Form for the consolidation of data with its new features for the 2022 report. The auto-fill consolidation report highlights the auto fill of population data as well as auto labeling of the Philippine Standard Geographic Code for each municipality and city. The Population data are from 2021 estimates taken from the Department of Health (DOH) Epidemiology Bureau.
Ms Carrillo emphasized the importance of recording and reporting using the tool starting from data collection at the barangay level, integration and consolidation at the municipal level and submission of report to the provincial level.
The proper assessment and collection of data is very crucial in the local nutrition action planning. The target population such as the children and mothers are important to be provided with the different nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programs by the different partners.

BUTUAN CITY - In the recently conducted Women's Summit 2022 at the Balanghai Hotel, this city, the Department of Health (DOH), the country's lead agency battling the pandemic, intensifies information drive on COVID-19 vaccination and took the opportunity to orient the participants of the summit on COVID pediatric vaccination.
Ms. Phoebie Rhanie Demata-Boque, Health Education & Promotion Officer (HEPO) II of the DOH Caraga presents and explains how pediatric vaccination protects children against the COVID-19 and in effect increase the vaccination rate in the region and contribute to achieve herd immunity against the virus.
Ms. Demata-Boque highlighted that “COVID-19 vaccination for children 5-17 years old will prevent the children from severe COVID-19 effects and it protects younger ones ages 4 years old and below and lastly it will help the children in returning their childhood life to normal”.

Butuan City – Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) of the 18 local government units of Surigao Del Sur convened for a face-to-face meeting on March 8, 2022, at Gold Bar Function Hall, Tandag City.
In her presentation, PNAO Emerlinda Ascarez shared the provincial nutrition situation, particularly the prevalence of stunting, wasting, and underweight among 0-59 months children. In the list, the Municipality of Lianga ranked first in all of the indicators: underweight, stunting and wasting.
NNC Caraga, Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Nino Archie S. Labordo challenged the Provincial Government of Surigao del Sur to identify and prioritize LGUs listed with a high prevalence of stunting and wasting. He likewise encouraged every local government unit (LGU) to put budget for the first 1,000 days program of a child’s life.
