By virtue of Proclamation 930 issued in the year 2020, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte declared the second week of March of every year as the “Philippine Digestive Health Week”. The proclamation takes cognizance of the need to “strengthen national and local efforts in providing a comprehensive and coordinated approach to health development with emphasis on scaling up health promotion and preventive care, by improving health literacy and mainstream health promotion and protection”. In a report published by the Philippine Statistics Authority in 2021, diseases or complications of the digestive tract are among the top causes of deaths in the Philippines. The most common, among others, are liver cancer, colorectal cancer, peptic ulcer disease, diarrhea and stomach ulcer.
This year’s PDHW theme is “Malusog na Tiyan at Bituka sa Gitna ng Pandemya”. This is anchored on the continuous call of health experts to all Filipinos to take a proactive role in caring for their digestive health, most especially during the pandemic. To celebrate the PDHW, the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology (PSG) in conjunction with allied health societies, is set to hold various online events. In what’s considered the largest gathering of GI experts in the Philippines, among the various events during the weeklong celebration, the main event is the 2022 Joint Annual Convention which will happen on March 11-12 & 18-19, 2022.
How do we take care of our tummy?
It is famously known that prevention is better than cure. In a research publication by the American Society of Microbiology, a child somewhere in the world dies from diarrheal disease every fifteen seconds. According to the research, among the various measures to prevent gastrointestinal illnesses, the provision of adequate sanitation and proper hygiene tops the list. This prevention would include the proper handling of food and water, proper storage of food items, and clean environment.

BUTUAN CITY— Two Typhoon Odette-hit provinces of Caraga Region - Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands -topped stunting prevalence in the 2021 Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) among provinces in the region reported during the Provincial and City Nutrition Action Officers and City and District Nutrition Program Coordinators on 24 February 2022 at Almont City Hotel, Butuan City. Surigao del Norte posted a stunting prevalence of 16.46% or 5,004 children out of 30,866 covered preschool children, while the Province of Dinagat Islands recorded 13.74% of stunting prevalence or around 1,778 children out of 13,805 total number of weighed preschool children.
National Nutrition Council Caraga, Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Niño Archie S. Labordo expressed during the meeting that given the situation brought by Typhoon Odette, coupled by the challenges of the pandemic, stunting is expected to increase and affect more children in the pummeled areas of Surigao and Dinagat Islands.
Stunting or low height-for-age is measured by height-for-age z-score of more than 2 standard deviations below the World Health Organization (WHO) Child Growth Standards median. Accordingly, WHO classified stunting prevalence as <2.5%: very low; 2.5 to <10%: low; 10 to <20%: medium; 20 to <30%: high; and ≥30%: very high.
Stunting reflects the cumulative effects of undernutrition starting from the mother’s pregnancy until the child reaches two years of age.

Butuan City--The Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) and Nutrition Program Coordinators (NPCs) of the local government units (LGUs) convened for a blended meeting on February 24, 2022, at Almont City Hotel, Butuan City and via Zoom meeting. One of the most significant agendas presented is the status of reports, which includes the assessment of the Functionality of the Local Nutrition Committees, Capacity Mapping of Nutrition Workers and Inventory and Status of Measurement Tools. Most of the LGUs are able to submit their reports completely.
