Sedentary Feb2022People are spending more and more time doing sedentary activities. The sedentary lifestyle is being at rest for too long with little or no exercise. Even during leisure times, often people are just sitting or lying down while using laptops or mobile devices, watching TV, or playing video games. Also, nowadays, working and learning have become more sedentary with long days sitting in front of a computer.

A Sedentary lifestyle or an inactive lifestyle is one of the major risks to one’s health. It can increase the threat of several chronic diseases and factors that cause mortality. Long duration of physical inactivity can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and high blood sugar levels, which can cause damage to the blood vessels and increases the risk of heart attack and even stroke. Being physically inactive and long hours of sitting is also a risk of certain cancers including colon, breast, and lung cancer.

In February, we are Celebrating National Cancer Awareness Month and Philippine Heart Month. With this, NNC Caraga would like to remind everyone that physical activity and regular exercise are vital for optimum health, and you may need to start moving now!

MNP SurigaoFeb15The use of food fortification has been suggested as an alternative to mitigate micronutrient deficiency due to primarily lack of nutritious food intake. It is intended to increase vitamin and mineral intake of young children aged 6-23 months and improve their nutritional status.

Micronutrient powder was named "Sprinkles" at that time. It was discovered by Professor Stanley Zlotkin in Canada in 1996. Micronutrient powder was developed because ‘twas observed that the standard iron drops were not effective, as adherence to treatment remained poor. Thus, a simple, inexpensive and potentially viable new method to provide micronutrients has been conceptualized. Responding to the challenges, micronutrient supplements (with different brand names) were developed. "Sprinkles" was the first brand developed by the "Sprinkles Global Health Initiative" at The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto.

Micronutrient powder is a power blend of vitamins and minerals, and very safe and effective in reducing micronutrient malnutrition. Designed to correct micronutrient deficiencies by improving the nutritional profile of foods. Powdered vitamins and minerals are scientifically proven to provide the nutrients that infants and children need to ensure their best possible growth and development. It contains a recommended daily allowance of 15 different vitamins and minerals: Vitamins A, D, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, Niacin, Folate, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Selenium and Iodine.
