Healthy Heart 2022Butuan City – In connection with the observance of the Philippine Heart Month and as mandated by the Presidential Proclamation No. 1096 of 1973, the National Nutrition Council conducted a webinar on Healthy Living for a Healthy Heart on February 17, 2022 via Zoom conferencing.

The webinar was attended in by 60 participants composed of local nutrition workers, partners of health, representatives from different provinces, representatives from the academe, and Caraga-wide citizens.

On his message, Dr. Nino Archie S. Labordo, the Officer-in-Charge of the National Nutrition Caraga highlighted the importance of choosing a heart-healthy gift or practice a healthy lifestyle and diet to keep one healthy.

Resource speaker, Ms. Charlaine Ayessa Rubillos, a Registered Nutritionist – Dietitian, the OIC-Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) of San Francisco, Agusan Del Sur imparted insights on the cardiovascular risk factors, also emphasized the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), provided comprehensive discussion on Kumainment #8, “Limit intake of salty, fried, fatty, and sugar-rich food to prevent cardiovascular diseases”, and Kumainment #9, “Attain normal body weight through proper diet and moderate physical activity to prevent obesity and maintain good health”, and lastly, Kumainment #10, “Be physically active, make healthy food choices, manage stress, avoid alcoholic beverages, and do not smoke to help prevent lifestyle related NCDs”. In addition, a discussion included the nutrients and recommended intake (e.g. Saturated fat, Polyunsaturated fat, MUFA, Total Fat, Carbohydrate, and etc that is according to the American Heart Association (AHA) Diet/Lifestyle Guidelines. She also provided healthy cooking tips, advised the audience to practice healthy food choices, and modify their lifestyle.

DOST FNRI eNutlaunchingButuan City --The Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) organized the virtual launching of Enhanced Nutribun (E-nutribun) new variants – Orange and Purple Sweet potato variant.

The launching was conducted via Zoom Platform and live streamed on different social media platforms on February 16, 2022 with the theme: “OooPs… may bagong variants ng Enhanced Nutribun! Orange and Purple Sweet potato naman!”.

It was attended by more than 400 participants from different regions, offices, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, DOST-FNRI Director IV and Scientist II, delivered her welcome message and assured that DOST-FNRI will continue to develop food technology for nutritious, safe and affordable food products that will help address malnutrition and food security.

“We hope that every bite of our new variant of Enhanced Nutribun delivered to every child as well as their families will make them healthier, smarter and brighter. Now, rest assured that we will continue to develop food technology for nutritious, safe and affordable food products that will help address malnutrition and food security.”

DOST Secretary Hon. Fortunato T. De la Peña encouraged the enthusiasm in everyone to support and adopt the new variants of E-Nutribun by sharing the possibilities that it opened such as job creation, profit generation and addressing nutrient gaps among children.

PIMAM Mainit Feb10Surigao City- Crash Course on the Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) has started to orient in the typhoon Odette ravaged local government units on 9 February 2022, particularly in the Municipality of Mainit, Surigao del Norte. 

The mobilization started after the ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF), a food commodity purposely given to malnourished children, was already delivered to LGUs in the Province of Surigao del Norte. Department of Health (DOH) and UNICEF, delivered the commodities in the first week of January 2022.

Management of moderate to severe acute malnutrition is necessary as children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) are 9 -12 times more likely to die than those who are well nourished. On the other hand, children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) are 3 - 4 times more likely to die than those who are well nourished.

The Nutrition cluster led by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) with UNICEF as co-lead are in close monitoring with the vulnerable group as the impact of a disaster may further deteriorate the nutritional state. 

DOH Memo No 2015-0055- National Guidelines in the Management of Acute Malnutrition among Children < 5 years old provide standardized protocols specifically on emphasis on linkages and referrals, supply networks, indicators for monitoring, and importance of PIMAM in emergency settings.

The National Nutrition Council on 7 February 2022 conducted a meeting to revisit its agency’s vision and mission in the continuous and unending service to partners and clients.

Led by OIC RNPC - Nino Archie Labordo, setting the tone for the unity of service, updates and status and re-assignment for better work. The meeting highlighted to the new administrative staff, technical staff and information management officers (IMO’s), the proper assignment and the organization's knowledge as the key to unity and achieving objectives.

Further emphasized are the NNC core values of integrity, zeal, excellence, sensitivity and transparency.

An active group of people who are committed to adhering common objectives, who work well together and enjoy doing so, and who provide a high-quality output”, was put in for brainstorming and later drew commitment from staff.

Veruela Feb 10 group discussionProsperidad, Agusan del Sur- Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Laniebelle Angchangco, Provincial Health Office (PHO) Maternal Health Coordinator, Annabelle Dela Cruz and Provincial Nutrition Focal Point (PNFP) Mariella Rayco of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) facilitated an open discussion with the pregnant and lactating mothers in selected barangays of Agusan del Sur from February 2-10, 2022.

The group started by introducing themselves and invited the participants to share their experiences, knowledge, issues and insights with regards to assessment, measurement of weight, height for body mass index (BMI) calculation and measurement of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and other concerns during pregnancy.

The calculation of the BMI and the measurement of MUAC of the participants are necessary to identify the presence of malnourishment among pregnant women.

PNAO Angchangco shared the importance of water, birth spacing, exclusive breastfeeding, and consequences of malnourishment to pregnant women.

On the other hand, PHO Maternal Health Coordinator Dela Cruz shared the importance of maternal health care, prenatal visits, and taking vitamins all throughout the pregnancy.

Meanwhile, PNFP Rayco shared the importance of the first 1000 days as the golden window of opportunity for the children and the mother. Likewise, orientation to pinggay pinoy plate for pregnant and lactating women was included.

SUNJAButuan City-- To follow through the country’s progress in achieving the strategic objectives of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Global Movement, a two-day assessment consultation series was organized by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) on 10 and 14 February 2022 via zoom conference. 

Attended by 97 participants including the NNC Regional offices, the consultation series identified the strength and good practices in the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition programs, projects and activities, assess functional multisectoral and multi-stakeholder platform, check on mobilization advocacies and initiatives, measure existence of policies, guidelines and memorandum circular for increasing investments for nutrition and identify different capacity building in strengthening local government units nutrition program implementation.

The 2021 Philippine SUN Joint Assessment Consultation Series captured the different efforts provided by the Philippine SUN Networks from government, civil society, academe, non-government organization donors and business society.
