Prosperidad Feb42022Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur- Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) in Prosperidad convened its First Quarter Meeting on 4 February 2022 to discuss the accomplishments in the previous year and the activities lined up in 2022.

In the meeting, MNAO Jocelyn Branzuela presented and compared the accomplishments of Prosperidad in terms of nutrition programs from the year 2020 to the year 2021. In 2020, the target population for OPT Plus was 9,195 with total population of children weighed at 9,576 which earned them a percentage of 104%. However, for the year 2021, total weighed children are only at 8,764 out of 11,173 posting a percentage of only 78.4%.

MNAO Branzuela then presented the OPT Plus Comparative Report by barangay and requested the BNSs to share the challenges experienced. According to the report, the reduce number of children are due to transfer of the child to other locality, restriction on house-to-house visit and/or any gathering and parent’s refusal to weigh their child due to the threat of COVID-19.

Furthermore, MNAO Branzuela shared an overview of their calendar of activities for the year 2022: a monthly meeting every third (3rd) Thursday of the month; Pinggang Pinoy orientation to pregnant and lactating mothers for 1st quarter; Exclusive breastfeeding orientation for 2nd quarter; Complementary feeding orientation for 3rd quarter.; Pinggang Pinoy orientation to elderly people for 4th quarter.

Radyo Kaagapay 12th yearButuan City- Radyo Kaagapay DXCN 107.3, a nutriskwela community radio station located in the Municipality of Sibagat, Agusan del Sur, celebrated its 12th Year Founding Anniversary on 31 January 2022.

Simultaneously, the municipality celebrated with thanksgiving as they opened a new room and new look for the radio station. A simple ribbon cutting and blessings of the radio station highlighted the event. Doing the honor in the ribbon cutting are Radyo Kaagapay Station Manager Elizabeth M. Badajos and NNC Caraga representative Nutrition Officer II Ms. Leah Vina Vargas.

During the program, the humble beginnings of the radio station were shared and how it continued its battle against hunger and malnutrition. Likewise, MNAO Montino reported the nutrition status of the Municipality of Sibagat in the past six years and how the prevalence of malnutrition decreased throughout the years.

The Nutriskwela Radio Station, Radyo Kaagapay of the Municipality of Sibagat was formed in 2008 through the efforts and partnership of the National Nutrition Council with the Municipal Government of Sibagat.

“Kaagapay” a local term for companion, will be accompany the journey of the municipality especially in the promotion of better nutrition in the community. #MPRayco

DOST FNRI NNSButuan City –Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), conducted a pre-survey coordination meeting with the selected local government units in the Province of Agusan del Sur on 27 January 2022 via Zoom Conferencing.

Prior to the activity DOST-FNRI in the person of Maylene Cajucom had a close coordination with Agusan del Sur Provincial Government through Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Laniebelle T. Angchangco for the scheduled pre-survey coordination meeting.

In the virtual meeting, DOST-FNRI Team Coordinator Cajucom discussed the overview of National Nutrition Survey (NNS), the areas covered (57 barangays), and the survey needed such as the pre-survey notes and information forms, list of local officials and contact person, accommodation, security measures, local aides and transportation. The qualifications and duties of local aides who would guide the DOST-FNRI researchers in the area was also considered.

The comprehensive survey aims to provide scientific data on the nutritional and health status among Filipinos which relevant in planning nutrition and development programs including formulation of policies for implementation.

Sibagat awards21Butuan City- Municipality of Sibagat in Agusan del Sur received various awards during the 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony and plagues finally handed over on 31 January 2021 by the NNC Caraga in said town.

The Municipality who had high prevalence rate of malnutrition in the previous years made their efforts in responding the problem of malnutrition. The Municipal Nutrition Committee headed by Mayor Maria Liza L. Evanglista together with the MNC members restructured their strategy to fight the increased rate of malnutrition in the town.

Nutrition and nutrition-related programs became their priority. Some of their strategies in fighting malnutrition is the effective dissemination of nutrition information through the Radyo Kaagapay DXCN 107.3, capacity building, household and community information advocacy and active participation in the different nutrition related programs, projects and activities.

The hard work they provided paid off as they were recognized during the 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony and the plaques were delivered during 42nd Araw ng Sibagat.

2022 Liver Cancer and Viral Hepatitis Awareness and Prevention Month theme  "Malusog na atay, masayang buhay!“Liver Cancer and Viral Hepatitis Awareness Prevention Month”, a month-long consciousness among the Filipinos declared through Republic Act No. 10526.

This month-long awareness prevention month aims to ensure the promotion of good health and healthy lifestyle that could lead every Filipinos to the prevention of liver cancer and viral hepatitis.

Liver cancer is one of the important public health problems in the Philippines as it is the fourth leading cause of cancer in the Philippines and the second leading cause of cancer deaths (Global Cancer Observatory, 2021).

The most common risk factor for this cancer is a long-term infection with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV). These infections can lead to inflammation and scarring of liver. The late-stage of scarring, termed as cirrhosis, can then lead to the development of liver cancer. The tricky part in cancers is that it can go for years undetected and is usually discovered when at a terminal stage and treatments are mostly ineffective. Because of this very reason, prevention of liver cancer is an important aspect of care for all.

Fire Tandag CityButuan City- On 20 January 2022 Tandag City alarmed with the fire incident affecting about 118 families at Purok Kalipayan Barangay Bongtud of said city.

City Nutrition Action Officer Reyveen John Geli activated the City Nutrition Cluster through a direct response of blanket feeding in the evacuation center at the Tandag City Gymnasium, Surigao del Sur.

Within 72 hours response, the cluster accounted the evacuees focusing on the vulnerable population, the children, pregnant and the lactating mothers. Utilizing the nutrition initial needs assessment (NINA), the group determined children who are with normal nutritional assessment and children that needs immediate care. The group utilized the same tool to assess the nutritional status of pregnant mothers.

After the assessment, the team rendered minimum service package for nutrition to the identified recipients which include nutri-pak (food supplements for pregnant and children) and multivitamins distribution.

Further, the Nutrition Cluster mobilized the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) community support group which aim to ensure the promotion, protection and support breastfeeding and installed lactation station inside the camp. The Cluster together with the Barangay Nutrition in Emergencies cluster strictly implemented the "No milk donations policy".
