RUTF 2022 receivedButuan City- The National Nutrition Council Caraga and the Department of Health Center for Health Development Caraga through the Nutrition Cluster coordinated with the UNICEF Philippines for the provision of the ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF) to help the moderately to severely acute malnourished children ages 6-59 months old in various provinces of Caraga region especially to most affected by typhoon Odette localities.

A total of 699 boxes of ready-to-use therapeutic food delivered by UNICEF Philippines on 25 January 2022 to DOH Warehouse, Butuan City. Other local government units of Caraga region to include the Province of Agusal del Sur, Province of Dinagat Island, Province of Surigao del Sur, Bayugan City, Tandag City, Cabadbaran City and Bislig City have also to receive a number of boxes of RUTF from the same organization.

The ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is a peanut-based paste that is energy-dense, mineral- and vitamin-enriched food that does not require any preparation or refrigeration. This is a ready-to-eat food in a packet which means it does not have to be mixed with potentially contaminated water.

The theme for Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) 2022 is “Leeg ay Tutukan, Goiter ay Lunasan.”
In adherence to the Presidential Proclamation No. 1188 on December 11, 2016, the National Nutrition Council Caraga, as one of the many agencies that promotes good nutrition for all, joins in the observance of the Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) celebrated every last week of January.

This year, the theme for Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) is “Leeg ay Tutukan, Goiter ay Lunasan.”

This campaign aims to disseminate the ill effects, prevention, and signs and symptoms of goiter or bosyo in Filipino. The said target is parallel with the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) that is to eliminate micronutrient deficiencies in the Philippines. To reinforce the advocacy in battling the problem of micronutrient deficiencies, specifically iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), Republic Act No. 8172 or “An Act Promoting Salt Iodization Nationwide and For Related Purposes” also known as the ASIN Law enacted in 1995.

The prevalence of thyroid function abnormalities in the Philippines is 8.53% among adults, and the most common disorder is goiter according to the 2012 Philippine Thyroid Diseases Study (PhilTiDes-1). The thyroid gland influences almost all the metabolic processes in your body through the hormones it produces. Thyroid disorders can be a harmless goiter that doesn’t require treatment and they can also be life-threatening cancer. The most common thyroid problems involve the abnormal production of thyroid hormones. 

Burgos OdetteLocated at the northeastern part of Siargao Island, facing the Pacific Ocean is the Municipality of Burgos.

When Typhoon Odette made its first landfall at Siargao Islands, the municipality of Burgos was the most affected. It destroyed the homes of many, health facilities almost became debris and many left without the means to move outside the island.

In the visit at Burgos Municipal Hall on 8 January 2022 there is almost no staff in the town hall on duty, instead, the Regional Nutrition Cluster Team spoke with the Team Leader of DOH-CHD 11, Dr. Allen Christopher Sian about the current situation of Burgos.

According to Dr. Sian, the main concerns of Burgos were open defecation, limited water supply, psychosocial services and maintenance medicines. Upon visit, no reported cases for acute malnutrition but as days running and food availability is dependent on relief assistance, cases for acute malnutrition are probable.

Most of the houses in Burgos are heavily devastated by the typhoon including the comfort rooms. This arises the problem for sanitation, specifically open defecation. Dr. Sian emphasized the need for portalets which shall be stationed to different areas in Burgos.

Siargao NINAButuan City- On 7-10 January 2022, the Nutrition Cluster together with the UNICEF staff conducted a post post-disaster nutrition initial needs assessment to most affected municipalities when Typhoon Odette entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on 16 December 2021.

NNC Caraga PNFP Mariella Rayco together with UNICEF Philippines Nutrition Officer Amina Lim, UNICEF Philippines WASH Officer Rasul Abdullah and Surigao del Norte DNPC Marissa Solloso, as members of the Nutrition Cluster Team for Siargao, talked to the MNAOs, Midwifes, MHOs and MSWDOs of the respective municipalities about the aftermath of Typhoon Odette.

Observed in all municipalities are the badly damaged health and nutrition facilities. Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) services, facilities and supplies such as breastfeeding area, IYCF support group, human milk bank, IYCF counselling cards, breastfeeding flipcharts, EO 51 posters and breastfeeding kits are no longer functional and cannot be used for its purpose.

Also damaged and or running out stocks are the nutrition-related commodities (vitamin A, MNP, IFA, zinc drops, oresol) stored in the respective RHUs. Commodities that are helpful in the management of acute malnutrition like the RUTF, RUSF, ReSoMal, and high energy biscuits are also out of stocks.

Project ANAK LoretoButuan City- Nutrition Workers in Loreto trained on DOST-FNRI Project ANAK or the “Accelerated Nutrient Advocacy for Kids”, in two batches on January 19-20 and January 21-22, 2022 for batch 1 and batch 2 respectively conducted at Morente’s Eatery Function Hall, Purok 6 Poblacion Loreto, Agusan del Sur.

In a message shared by National Nutrition Council Caraga-OIC, Dr. Nino Archie Labordo, Project ANAK is a strategy focused on feeding interventions necessary to combat malnutrition problem among six years old and above. The strategy is one of the many interventions under the first 1,000 days package of a child’s life. It is providing of additional calories, energy and nutrients through the complementary foods that DOST will be imparting, Dr. Labordo added.

The DOST-FNRI opted to use the blended approach on which participants are gathered in one area while some of its resource persons and topics being shared virtually. Videos containing exercises such as guidelines on how to prepare complementary food were shared for the participants guidance.

Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Jacqueline Frances Momville expressed that “ang solusyon ng malnutrisyon ay nasa kamay ng iyong barangay”. She then encouraged everyone to share the learnings to the community. Proper nutrition or the correct infant and young child feeding practices will give important solution to end malnutrition, the PHO added.

Pilar Siargao 2022BUTUAN City - The Typhoon Odette had made a huge damaged on the Islands of Siargao and affected individuals and families are trying to cope up with the aftermath of the typhoon. Aside from the ravaged of Typhoon Odette, existing challenge of the COVID -19 virus has still to manage vis-à-vis the current post typhoon damages. Thus, to help in combating the pandemic, National Nutrition Council Caraga provided the Barangay Nutrition Scholars with health kits. Each of the kits has a bottle of alcohol, face masks and face shields.

A total of eighty (80) BNS health kits distributed on 7-10 January 2022 to Barangay Nutrition Scholars to selected municipalities of Siargao Islands in Surigao del Norte. These municipalities include Del Carmen, San Benito, Sta. Monica, Burgos and Pilar.

The provision of these health kits to Barangay Nutrition Scholars will help them protect themselves from the threat of COVID-19 virus as they rebuild their homes destroyed by the recent typhoon and at the same time help and assist in nutrition and healthcare related activities in their area.
