NutCluster WarehouseButuan City- One of the emerging cases post typhoon Odette are the reported diarrhea and or report of acute gastroenteritis in typhoon affected areas particularly the Dinagat and Siargao islands, as shared during the health Quad Cluster meeting on 31 December 2021 via Zoom Conferencing.

UNICEF Nutrition Officer Mr. Pete John Bicarra shared that therapeutic food commodities are its way to augment hunger particularly with moderate to severe care malnutrition and related cases including diarrhea.

National Nutrition Council Caraga being the head of the Nutrition Cluster has mobilized members and developmental partners to provide response particularly on mitigating cases of malnutrition.

As partner to save the malnourished children, NNC together with UNICEF coordinated for the warehouse facility, logistic preparations and delivery schemes.

RNAC 2021 BXUButuan City- The 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony organized by National Nutrition Council Caraga on 20 December 2021 commended the Local Government Units (LGUs) with low level of stunting prevalence rate <10% and very low-level of stunting prevalence rate <2.5% WHO cut off based on the 2021 Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) report.

The following Local Government Units with Low Level of Stunting Prevalence Rate <10% based on WHO Cut off from 2021 OPT+ are:

  • Municipality of Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte
  • Municipality of Nasipit, Agusan del Norte
  • Municipality of Remedios T. Romualdez, Agusan del Norte
  • Municipality of Tubay, Agusan del Norte
  • Municipality of Loreto, Agusan del Sur
  • Municipality of Rosario, Agusan del Sur
  • Municipality of Santa Josefa, Agusan del Sur
  • Municipality of Sibagat, Agusan del Sur
  • Municipality of Veruela, Agusan del Sur
  • Municipality of Burgos, Surigao del Norte
  • Municipality of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte
  • Municipality of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur

NutClus Odette SisonButuan City- The Regional Nutrition Cluster chaired by the National Nutrition Council visited the typhoon Odette ravaged towns in Surigao del Norte on 22-24 December 2021.

Joining the Nutrition Cluster are from the Department of Health and the Provincial Nutrition Office of Surigao del Norte. The group visited the municipalities of Sison, Gigaquit, Placer, Bacuag, Claver, Tubod and Alegria all in the Province of Surigao del Norte.

During the monitoring, the said towns are busy in the response activities to include repacking and distribution of relief goods to the affected families.

The conduct of the visit and monitoring is aimed at ensuring that the vulnerable children and mothers are taken cared of, likewise, advisories regarding installation of breastfeeding corners and no milk formula donations are provided.

BNS Kit GigaquitButuan City- Typhoon affected areas in Surigao del Norte received kits for barangay nutrition scholars shared by the National Nutrition Council Caraga on 22-24 December 2021.

The BNS kits are part of the personal protection against COVID-19 virus while the BNSs are on duty. Items included in the kit are facemasks, alcohol and shield.

Areas visited by NNC with kits provided are the municipalities of Sison, Placer, Bacuag, Gigaquit, Claver, Tubud, Alegria and Surigao City.

The visit also monitored the post disaster situation and presence of evacuation areas. Except for Surigao City most of the LGUs with evacuation centers returned back home after 72 hours post disaster.

NNC is hopeful to visit the LGUs in Dinagat and Siargao Islands to meet with the nutrition networks and provide necessary response.

RNAC 2021 BNS GarciaButuan City- Soledad B. Garcia of Brgy. Baan Km. 3 is the City’s Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (OBNS) of Butuan City and contender to the regional search for the OBNS shared her appreciation to the support given by the Barangay Nutrition Committee in the nutrition program implementation.

The message was shared by BNS Garcia during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held on 20 December at LJ Mega Convention Hall, Butuan City.

She mentioned of a high number of malnourished children in her barangay in the previous years but because of the support provided by the BNC, Brgy. Baan Km. 3 recorded a zero malnourished child this year.

Brgy. Baan Km. 3 is Chaired by ABC President Gemma P. Tabada who is active in pushing the welfare of good nutrition for children and the whole community. BNS Garcia relayed that during the Chairpersonship of Hon. Tabada policies are aggressively passed to include ordinances on health and nutrition concerns, welfare of the constituents and health workers and implementation of the barangay nutrition action plan.

NutClus INGOButuan City- Nutrition Cluster response team convened for widen support and partnership on 27 December 2021 via blended meeting at Almont Inland Resort Hotel, Butuan City.

In a quick but meaningful meeting, OIC NPC Nino Archie Labordo shared to the group the post typhoon Odette situation particularly on nutrition related concerns in the ravaged areas of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands.

Providing responses are members of the cluster to include updates from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on prize freeze, Department of Health (DOH) on commodities available, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) on the progress of responses, and the Breastfeeding Nanay’s in Caraga on the online information drive.

On the other hand, the local government units of Tandag City shared on the responses forwarded to areas affected to include water and food. Also, the Province of Surigao del Sur shared of the related polices with regards to response by the province to areas of Surigao, Dinagat and Siargao.
