The Regional Nutrition and Anti-Hunger Committee (expanded RNC Region 9) culminates the observance of the 43rd Nutrition Month Celebration with a Regional Nutrition Quiz Bee among Grade 6 Students of the eight Schools’ Division in the region. The activity coordinated by the National Nutrition Council Region 9, highlights the month-long campaign on healthy diet for good nutrition and healthy life. This year’s Nutrition Month Theme “Healthy diet, gawing habit – FOR LIFE!” aims to increase awareness of the public and practice good nutrition and healthy lifestyle.
The Regional Nutrition Quiz Bee opened to all Elementary Schools Divisions in Region 9. A joint activity of the RNAHC, the Department of Health Regional Office 9 provided for the venue and accommodation, it served as the culminating activity of the committee and was held on 27 July 2017 at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.
Getting a strong and positive response from the eight Schools’ Divisions, the activity was participated by the Schools’ Divisions of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga Del Norte, Zamboanga Del Sur, Zamboanga City, Dapitan City, Dipolog City, Pagadian City and Isabela City. Each Schools Divisions registered two Grade Six contestants respectively as per guidelines except for Dipolog City with only one contestant. Together with the student contestants were the coaches who also served as chaperons. A total of fifteen students competed in the Nutrition Quiz Bee undergoing three levels of progressively challenging questions categorized as Easy, Moderate, and Difficult rounds. The questions were confined to the Nutrition Month Theme Talking Points of the National Nutrition Council. The expertise of the professors from the Western Mindanao State University was tapped in the formulation of questions as well as the experienced Quiz Master to host the quiz.
The results of the Nutrition Quiz Bee were overwhelming with the contestants of Zamboanga del Norte Schools Division; Ms. Mary Faith Geraga from Manukan East Central School and Mr. John Lloyd Bohol from Linay Central School of the Municipality of Manukan bagging the first place after completing the series of questions with no wrong answer and for a perfect score of 100 points. Followed closely were the contestants from Pagadian City and Zamboanga City getting the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The first three top winners were awarded with medals, plaque and certificate of recognition as well as school bags and other school materials contributed by the members of the RNAHC. Non-winners also went home with certificates of recognition/participation and with each child contestant bringing home a bag of school supplies. Coaches and the schools of the winning contestants were also presented with plaque and certificate of recognition.
In his welcome and inspirational message, the DOH 9 Assistant Regional Director Dr. Joshua G. Brillantes said that he is impressed with the collaboration of DOH9 and NNC9 for spearheading the Quiz Bee making it significant event for culminating the 2017 Nutrition Month Celebration. It is also one way of evaluating the learnings of the children on the month long nutrition promotion on healthy diet. As encouragement Dr. Brillantes said “we will call it first regional nutrition quiz bee so that we can make it a tradition every year conducting such wonderful activity for students.” Nutrition Program Maria Del Pilar Pamela R. Tarroza also expressed her great appreciation of the support from the RNAHC members, the DOH9 for sponsoring the venue and accommodation of the participants, the DEPED R9 for coordinating the participation of the schools divisions, the DSWD, DOST, DAR and the WMSU for sponsoring the prizes of the contestants.
