ANGELIE B. MAMENTOD
Barangay Milagrosa, Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay
Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), Angelie B. Mamentod or fondly called “Angel” is an indigenous resident of Barangay Milagrosa in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibuagy. Angelie is 29- years old married and has a daughter aged 5 years old. She has a natural passion for community service and her persistent tagging along with the Barangay Health Workers during home visits had caught the notice of the Punong Barangay who appointed her as the Barangay Nutrition Scholar in 2014 upon observing her interest to serve in the community.
Angel, according to the barangay officials is a dedicated and committed volunteer worker. She sees to it that the mothers with young children in the community have regular access to services like food production, micronutrient supplementation, livelihood assistance, food fortification and nutrition education classes. In her three years as BNS of Barangay Milagrosa, she has contributed in improving and maintaining the good nutrition of the children. Hence in her most recent results of the Operation Timbang there was no case finding of severely underweight children except for one case of underweight child. The child though quickly improved to normal nutritional status within the sixth months of nutrition intervention like feeding, provision of livelihood assistance and conduct of regular home visits for nutrition counselling to the mother and other child caregivers in the household.
As Barangay Nutrition Scholar, BNS Angel initiated the following projects with the support of the Barangay Nutrition Committee and health workers
- BNS Project 1 (Buntis Nanay Special Project) – this project is in support of the first 1000 days of the child. (tracking of pregnant women, referral to the health facility and feeding program, provision of iron supplements with folic acid, prenatal visits).
- BNS-SNP Project (Bantay Nutrisyon Special – Siguradong Nutrisyon at Pangkalusugan) this project focuses on feeding preschool children aged 2-4 years old not enrolled in the Daycare Center. The mothers assist the BNS in cooking the food to ensure safe and nutritious foods served to the children
- BNS 3 Project (Bantay Nanay Special Project) – this project focuses on nutrition promotion, providing correct information on good nutrition through scheduled mothers classes. Topics discussed are on IYCF and the 10 kumainments.
- Chicken dispersal – given to families with underweight school children (BNS bought chicken for dispersal using the cash prize she got from the province as OBNS)
Income Generating Projects were also initiated by the BNS involving the Indigenous Peoples particularly the Subanens. Bag -making made of beads and; iodized salt vending is among the livelihood projects that augment the income of the disadvantaged in the barangay.
Food production is the pet project of the Barangay Nutrition Scholar. She established gardens surrounding the Nutrition Office that involves the Barangay Nutrition Committee members, 4 Ps, and Indigenous Peoples (Subanen).
With BNS Angel serving the community nutrisyon ng familya’y sigurado!
