RO9 HemophiliaHemophilia is a rare type of disorder wherein an individual may bleed for a longer time after an injury because the blood lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins or clotting factors. This disorder is usually inherited from the parents and the severity of hemophilia depends on the amount of protein factor present in the blood. By virtue of Proclamation No. 1478, series of 2008, yearly, the month of April is celebrated as National Hemophilia Awareness Month to educate the public and spread awareness on this disorder since many are not aware about hemophilia.

An individual with hemophilia normally experiences bleeding in the different parts of the body such as in the joints (usually in the ankles, knees and elbows), mouth and gums, nose, skin (bruises), soft tissues and muscles. Aside from this, an infected person bleeds a lot after receiving vaccinations or injections and notices the presence of blood in the urine and stool. According to the World Hemophilia Federation, about 10, 000 Filipinos are experiencing Hemophilia every year.

One way to treat hemophilia is by replacing the missing blood clotting factor so that the blood can clot properly; this is done by infusion of commercially prepared factor concentrates. Aside from this, treating hemophilia can also be done through following these healthy tips below:

  • Maintain a Normal Weight – Since hemophilia could cause bleeding in the joints and muscles, the excess weight may put more strain in the joints making it to bleed more. Practice exercising for at least 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times in a week to maintain a normal and healthy weight.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet – Choose a diet that’s high in fruits and vegetables since these foods are high in vitamins and minerals to boost the immune system and limit the intake of fried, salty and added sugar foods.
  • Consume Iron rich foods- Persons with hemophilia are recommended to eat iron-rich foods to help increase the body’s store of iron since it is depleted during bleeds. Dark green leafy vegetables, lean red meats, liver and dried beans are all good sources of iron.

Taking care of your health especially when you have hemophilia is highly important. Following the healthy tips listed above would help you to keep your joints strong and healthy, prevent muscle strains and bleeding in vulnerable joints. Moreover, it will also help you to sustain your depleting iron. Beating hemophilia is highly possible through practicing a healthy lifestyle and consuming a healthy diet.

Together, we will beat hemophilia in a healthy way!
