Pagadian City - Thirty-five school teachers and personnel participated in the Department of Agriculture 9 High Value Crops Development Program (#DA9HVCDP) the Vegetable Production Training for the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.
The training which aimed to equip teachers with agriculture knowledge, promotes the institution of sustainable, organic agriculture and responsible vegetable consumption among educators, students, including their families. It was held at Hotel Guillermo, Pagadian City on November 10 and 11, 2020.
“We are very grateful to be part of this training, the knowledge they impart to us will help us in addressing the status of malnutrition in our assigned communities, especially in using the harvests in our feeding program to our pupils. We will really do our best to pass on the information to others so that they can also learn from what we learn from this training,” said Mr. Roel Yuzon, Head Teacher at Regla Elementary School.
The lectures on Vegetable Production Management, School Garden Establishment, and Harvesting- Postharvest Management, Seed Production and Hands-On demonstration on the preparation of Natural Farming Technology Systems (NFTS) concoctions were delivered by DA-In House Agriculture Specialists from HVCDP.
According to Ms Analiza M. Quilo, DA9 GPP focal person the participants also include district office representatives, school nurses aside from ZDS elementary and high school teachers. Quilo said that the GPP trainings target 270 schools throughout the Zamboanga Peninsula by the end of 2020.
“We are hoping that what DA has provided to our teachers would reduce their load and anxieties in establishing their respective Gulayan sa Paaralan gardens.” added Ms. Analiza Quilo, GPP Focal Person.
Garden tools such as shovel, trowels, watering cans, spray bottles, seed trays and bolos, as well as garden inputs like assorted vegetable seeds, molasses and organic foliars, including IEC materials and Gulay recipes, were given to the participants at the end of the two-day training.
