One hundred (100) aquaculture booklets had recently been released by the Provincial Science and Technology Center - Zamboanga Sibugay Province (PSTC-ZSP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to two (2) Municipal Local Government Units (LGU)s in the said province.
The municipalities of Alicia and Payao each received forty (40) copies of the booklets, which contain helpful tips on seaweed production, harvesting, and establishment of good practices on the trade. Twenty (20) booklets along with digital copies have also been given to the LGUs and partner agencies such as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for ease of republication and dissemination.
Aside from being the agency’s response to the safety protocols set by the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay to prevent further spread of CoViD-19, the abovementioned activities form part of the DOST Grants-in-Aid (GIA) project “Establishment of S&T-based Seaweed Nursery and Post-Harvest Facility to support livelihood of conflict-vulnerable Municipalities in Zamboanga Sibugay”, in which recipients include Municipalities of Mabuhay, Talusan, Olutanga, Alicia, Payao and Magdaup, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
The GIA Program of DOST assists low-income community-based groups such as associations, cooperatives, LGUs, and academic institutions, including national high schools in remote areas. The program enables these groups to have enterprising activities via technology acquisition (S&T based equipment), human resource development, consultancy services, and product development.
