RO9 LiverLiver is one of the most important organs in our body. It breaks down fats, removes toxins and other harmful chemicals from our blood and helps fight infections. Unfortunately, one can have liver disease without knowing it because there are usually no symptoms until the late stages. In fact, it is among the deadliest cancers in the world where every 100 people who develop liver cancer of which 95 have high chances of dying due to the disease. Thus, to disseminate information and increase awareness on this disease, Republic Act No. 10526 was enacted declaring the month of January of every year as “Liver Cancer and Viral Hepatitis Awareness and Prevention Month.”

Obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and viral hepatitis are three of the major causes of liver disease. Here are ways to look after your liver and help avoid the onset of disease:

1. Limit alcohol consumption

Too much alcohol can overwhelm your liver’s capacity to break it down, which leads to the damage of cells and lead to fatty liver, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.

2. Exercise regularly

In general, exercise is good for your body. You can start exercising by doing simple routines like walking, gardening, dancing, or swimming.

3. Avoid Hepatitis

Hepatitis A, B, and C are all serious diseases that can damage the liver. In order to avoid these diseases, make sure you drink enough water and the food you eat are clean.

4. Drink tea

A large Japanese study found that drinking 5-10 cups of green tea per day was associated with improved blood markers of liver health. However, people who have liver problems, should exercise caution before consuming green tea extract, as it may cause damage.

5. Watch your medications

Taking too much over-the-counter medicines can damage the liver if they are used excessively. You can help yourself by only taking the medications that you really need and avoid combing drugs and drinking alcohol.

Educating oneself is the first step in prevention! This new year, it’s time for you to start taking care of your health. Be a liver lover and maintain its filter power. Surely, your liver will reward you in return in the future with its timeless beneficial function if you practice the tips mentioned above!
