RO9 OralHealth2021Maintaining a good oral health is essential to maintaining good overall health. The National Dental Health Month (NDHM) is observed every February pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 559 signed by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The observance aims to strengthen public awareness on the importance of good oral health. It encourages dentists, students, government agencies, and professional organizations to reach out to more people with no access to dental services.

Keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth clean and healthy can prevent disease and infection, and can help to avoid pain and sickness. Here are tips on how to take care of your oral health:

1. Brush at least twice a day

Upon waking up, after eating your meals, or before sleeping. Don’t forget to brush at least twice a day to maintain good oral hygiene.

2. Limit soft drinks and fruit juices

Sugary drinks soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, causing holes (cavities or caries). Limit your intake of these sugary drinks.

3. Use fluoridated toothpaste

Fluoride is a leading defense against tooth decay. It works by fighting germs that can lead to decay, as well as providing a protective barrier for your teeth.

4. Consider mouthwash

Mouthwash reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums, and re-mineralizes the teeth.

5. See your dentist for check-ups

You should take time to see your dentist for cleanings and check-ups. Dentists will definitely help you spot potential issues and offer treatment solutions.

Finally, don’t forget to SMILE! Your smile shows how confident you are! Always remember that taking care of your oral health is as important as taking care of your body and mental health. What are you waiting for? Visit a dentist now and don’t forget to brush brush brush!
