It’s hard to imagine our lives without the daily beverages that we enjoy. Most of us crave coffee especially in the morning and can’t complete the day without coffee as the saying goes “It feels so good to start the day with a cup of coffee”, and some even say that coffee is their daily dose of an energy boost.
Coffee consumption worldwide is estimated to be at 2.25 billion cups per day (medicalnewstoday.com). In the Philippines, a total of 3,350 bags weighing 60 kg/ bags per year of coffee consumed. It is pretty obvious the fondness of the Filipinos in coffee as coffee shops spur everywhere around the country from the year 2010 up to these days.
The coffee beans contain vitamin B1, B3, B5, and B2, and minerals. It also contains Magnesium and Manganese (fitbit.com). The coffee bean is naturally dense in antioxidants including chlorogenic acid that contains 70 to 350 mg of these antioxidants. These vitamins and minerals provide health benefits to the individuals. According to “The Journal of the American Medical Association”, coffee decreases the incidences of developing cognitive and nerve disorders. Other than the neurological effects of coffee, it can also boost metabolism and improve weight management through boosting metabolic rate and burning fats. Further studies require the intake of brewed coffee in helping blood sugar control and lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
With just two calories per 8-ounce cup (no creamer or sugar) and no fat, coffee is a pretty guilt-free way to boost your health. But don’t overdo it. More than 2 or 3 cups daily may increase blood pressure, especially in those with borderline or high readings. For some people it can cause insomnia, nervousness and restlessness. As the saying goes, “Everything is okay when in moderation as whatever is in deficit or in excess is not good”.
