Most individuals believe that sea salt is more advantageous than table salt due to its natural source of sodium. Manufacturers have fortified the table salt with iodine which is needed for thyroid hormone production. Sodium is a vital supplement that we can get from salt and some processed foods. Specialists suggested to minimize salt in our diet because too much of it can contribute to dehydration, heart illness and even high blood pressure.
Sea salt comes from evaporating seawater making it as a natural source of sodium while table salt comes from mining salt deposits. Producers process them into a fine precious stone which is easier to blend in food. Culinary chefs utilize sea salt in few recipes because of its texture and taste. Although individuals find sea salt as a good heathy component but its sodium substance is the same as the table salt in amount. According to studies, sea salt has less sodium than table salt but this is a big misconception. Table salt and sea salts both contain 40% sodium by weight. A teaspoon of table salt has 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium. The crystals of sea salt are bigger and only small amount of it can fit to a teaspoon, that is why, people might think that sea salt has less sodium than the table salt. Sea salt comes from a common source and contains other minerals including magnesium, calcium and potassium.
Sodium can help to control blood pressure and can make our nerve and muscle to work normally. Moderate salt consumption must be included in our diet for typical cell function and to preserve the acid balance of the blood. Table salt contains also iodine which is another basic supplement to our body. Iodine deficiency can cause goiter and other health problems. It can also affect the cognitive development of the children.
Both types of salt have been noted to have common benefits and have the same sodium content. What is important is for people to follow its recommended dietary consumption to avoid any health problems. Either way, it is still best to choose and use a salt that has been iodized. So, do the right thing by choosing the right one!
