MSGSeasonings are common flavor enhancers that we often use while cooking our dishes and one of these is the Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). It can be found in most kitchens to add flavor to food that we prepare for our family and friends. But the question is, "Is it safe to use MSG? What are its harmful effects?".

MSG is made up of water, sodium, and glutamate. Glutamate is a kind of amino acid that is used to make proteins in food and it enhances the flavor of the meat and vegetables. That is why many of us want to use the MSG to add flavor to our foods.

For many years, there are controversies attached to MSG. It has been classified as generally recognized by the Food and Drug Administration as a safe flavor enhancer. Many were still doubtful due to its glutamate composition which is harmful to our human brain. Aside from that, too much glutamate consumption can lead to cancer, headaches, and other health problems. But according to Medical News Today and Healthline, there is not enough evidence to support the link between MSG to some adverse reactions as reported by different individuals. It is important to know that the safe level of MSG consumption is at least 0.5 grams daily to avoid harmful side effects.

According to some dietitians, MSG can be used only as an additional flavor of the meat and consumers should follow the recommended dietary intake for a healthy lifestyle. MSG can be harmful only if it is used as a food preservative.  Using MSG in food preparation is not recommended especially for people with comorbidities such as hypertension, cardiovascular condition, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic conditions.
