Did you know that fish is loaded with many important nutrients? Fish is packed with many nutrients including high-quality protein, iodine, and various vitamins and minerals. Fatty fish are the healthiest of all fish because they are high in vitamin D and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for optimal body and brain function and have been linked to a lower risk of many diseases.
Oily fish contain significant amounts of oil throughout their body tissues and in their belly cavity. These fish oil contains the two fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are believed to benefit the cardiovascular system. Some examples of oily fish include trout, salmon, sardines, pilchards, kippers, eels, whitebait, mackerel, herring, and tuna. All these fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, whether canned, fresh, or frozen.
Oily fish has been linked to many health benefits, including a reduced inflammation, potentially lower the risk of heart disease, improved mental ability, and protection from vision loss, alcohol-related dementia, and rheumatoid arthritis. Oily fish consumption may also protect you from oral and skin cancers in their early and late stages. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to target and selectively inhibit the growth of malignant and pre-malignant cells at doses that do not affect the normal cells. Among women, a higher consumption of oily fish has been linked to a lower risk of breast cancer. Although eating oily fish promotes good health, consuming too much may not be beneficial. Large fish contains trace elements of mercury that can cause you harm. So, eat moderately!
