In order to manage the double burden of malnutrition, breastfeeding is crucial. Inequalities are decreased and food security is provided by breastfeeding. Inequalities that hinder sustainable development are addressed through defending, promoting, and assisting breastfeeding.
Every August, Breastfeeding Awareness Month is observed in accordance with Republic Act 10028, also known as the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009. The DOH and the National Nutrition Council, being the highest authority on nutrition policy and coordination, advise mothers to breastfeed exclusively for about the first six months, then to continue breastfeeding while introducing other foods until the child is at least 12 months old, and to do so for as long as the mother and child choose to do so.
In line with this month’s celebration with the theme “Sama-samang Itaguyod Tamang Kaalaman at Kalinga sa Pagpapasuso”, NNC9 conducted the CARAVAN Session 10 for the Local Nutrition Workers of Zamboanga Peninsula via Google Meet last August 16, 2022. The activity highlights the discussion of the Legal Mandates and Campaign on Breastfeeding, The Lactating and Breastfeeding Mother, Benefits of Breastfeeding, Correct Attachment and Different Breastfeeding Positions, and Common Breastfeeding Problems, their causes, and ways to address them, Nutritional Needs of Lactating and Breastfeeding Mothers, and the Optimal Breastfeeding Practices.
During the activity, a Refresher Orientation on Tutok Kainan was also included. The activity was participated by more than sixty-six (66) attendees composed of Nutrition Action Officers, Local Nutrition Program Coordinators, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, DOH-HRH Nutritionist-Dietitians, and NNC9 technical staff.
This National Breastfeeding Month, let us have time to spread knowledge, educate people, and have to celebrate. Let's all do our part to defend the right of a woman to breastfeed her child.
