Before and After MealDid you know that there are certain things you must do or must avoid doing before and after a meal? From lying down to smoking a cigarette- there are many post-meal routines we adopt over time. Some people eat their meal and then follow it up with a cup of tea, while others go straight to bed and take a nap. We are unaware of the fact that these seemingly healthy activities can hinder digestion. These habits can hamper the nutrition absorption mechanism of your body.

To help with digestion, drink a glass of warm water 30 minutes before a meal. In addition, this glass of water will keep you full and prevent overeating, especially during dinner. Many people are tempted to go to bed right away after eating. Lying down after having a meal can slow down the process of digestion. It may also make you feel bloated and can lead to heartburn. Wait for at least 2 hours before going to the bed. You may take a short walk of at least 15 to 20 minutes. Following a meal, you should also refrain from carrying heavy objects or engaging in strenuous activity. You might get a chance of getting stomach pain. You should also wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth.

Moreover, smoking after a meal promotes heartburn by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter. It also worsens symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome as well as ulcerative colitis (a stomach ulcer). Smoking also has a bad effect on the colon muscles. Taking a bath after eating can also interfere with the process of digestion. Digestion requires a lot of energy and a good amount of blood flow toward the stomach. When you take a bath or shower right after eating dinner, it causes a slight decrease in body temperature. If you are having dinner at home, wear loose and comfortable clothes. Tight-fitting clothes put pressure on your abdomen that can contribute to heartburn. We all know that fruits are rich in nutrients but eating them just after a meal will limit their absorption. If you consume fruits right after dinner, the body has a hard time digesting them effectively. This could alter the nutritional value of the food you're eating and may result in digestive problems.
